After years in development hell, Black Adam officially has a release date.
On Instagram, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shared artwork for the upcoming DC Extended Universe film. The artwork, a collaboration between DC Co-Publisher Jim Lee and artist BossLogic, shows Johnson as Black Adam and reveals a release date of December 22, 2021. Lee provided the base for the piece, while BossLogic brought it to completion.
"Like most kids growing up, I dreamed about being a superhero. Having cool superpowers, fighting for what’s right and always protecting the people," Johnson wrote. "It all changed for me, when I was 10 years old and was first introduced to the greatest superhero of all time - SUPERMAN."
"As a kid, Superman was the hero I always wanted to be. But, a few years into my fantasy, I realized that Superman was the hero, I could never be," he continued. "I was too rebellious. Too rambunctious. Too resistant to convention and authority."
"Despite my troubles, I was still a good kid with a good heart -- I just liked to do things my way. Now, years later as a man, with the same DNA I had as a kid -- my superhero dreams have come true," he shared. "I’m honored to join the iconic DC Universe and it’s a true pleasure to become, BLACK ADAM."
"BLACK ADAM is blessed by magic with the powers equal to SUPERMAN, but the difference is he doesn’t toe the mark or walk the line," he explained. "He’s a rebellious, one of a kind superhero, who’ll always do what’s right for the people -- but he does it his way. Truth and justice -- the BLACK ADAM way."
"This role is unlike any other I’ve ever played in my career and I’m grateful to the bone we’ll all go on this journey together," he concluded, adding, "Huge thank you to my friends, Jim Lee and BossLogic, for this first time ever bad ass collaboration."
A film starring the longtime antihero and Shazam Family antagonist has been in development since early 2000, though it hit several production snags along the way. It recently signed Jaume Collet-Serra to direct the film, reuniting him with Johnson after the two previously worked together on the upcoming Jungle Cruise for Disney.
Black Adam was created by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck in 1945, first appearing in “Marvel Family” #1. While the character was created as a foil for Shazam (the character formerly known as Captain Marvel), Black Adam has gone on to play a larger role within the DC universe, including as one of the leads in 2006’s weekly series 52.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Black Adam is scheduled to release on December 22, 2021. Production is expected to kick off in July.
