Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam is gearing up for an explosive debut at the box office during its opening weekend in theaters.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. and New Line's DC Extended Universe film is tracking to an opening weekend between $65 and $70 million at the domestic box office. Industry sources have noted that Black Adam is being seen as a very hot property at the moment since there is nothing else like it playing in theaters right now. The movie is reportedly tracking well with men over and under 25, women under 25, and Latino and Hispanic moviegoers and families. If Black Adam exceeds $68.1 million in its opening weekend, the film will become Johnson's best solo opening after 2001's The Mummy Returns. That total would also make Black Adam the tenth-biggest opening weekend for a DC film at the domestic box office, surpassing Aquaman's $67.8 million take in December 2018.

Even if Black Adam comes in on the lower end of its tracking, the film will have still performed better in its opening weekend than Shazam!, which was originally meant to feature Johnson's antihero before the actor convinced the studio to give Shazam! and Black Adam their own solo films. Shazam! opened to $53.5 million in April 2019 and ended its theatrical run with $140.3 million at the domestic box office and over $365 million worldwide. A sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is scheduled to open in theaters in 2023.

Black Adam Will Launch New DC Franchises

Warner Bros. and DC have a lot riding on Black Adam being another successful entry in the growing DCEU. The film is set to introduce the Justice Society of America to the shared universe and the hope at the studio is that audiences will take to the team, which consists of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), so that spinoffs can be greenlit. Fan reactions to Black Adam's Justice Society have been mostly well-received, with many likening the team to Marvel Comics' X-Men. Despite this comparison, Hodge has stated that the Justice Society is a "refreshing new look at what a superhero team is."

Black Adam will follow Teth Adam as he is freed from his earthly tomb 5,000 years after being bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods. Ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world, Black Adam's brute tactics attract the attention of the Justice Society. However, despite successfully preventing the Justice Society from stopping his rampage, Black Adam finds himself teaming up with the superheroes to stop a force more powerful than Adam himself that threatens to destroy the world.

Black Adam opens in theaters on Oct. 21.
