Warning: the following contains spoilers for Black Adam, in theaters now.

Black Adam pushes superhero action and violence beyond what's been shown in most PG-13 entries in the genre. The result is a film that definitely changes a lot of hierarchies, namely in terms of what can be gotten away with on-screen. This makes sense, given the film's initial rating, with one scene in particular recalling an infamous moment from a rival company.

Siege (by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel) was an event from Marvel Comics that involved Asgard being invaded by villains posing as heroes. One of these figures absolutely decimated another in an incredibly brutal fashion, with a level of gore unseen in mainstream Marvel comics at the time. Here's how the newest film in the DC Extended Universe emulates this incredible kill.

Sentry Performed a Mortal Kombat Fatality on Ares In Marvel's Siege

Sentry Ares Dark Avengers Siege of Asgard

Siege saw Norman Osborn's personal team of Dark Avengers invading Asgard, which had begun hovering over a Midwestern town in America. Building on the plots and developments of J. Michael Straczynski's run on Thor, the storyline saw Thor briefly taken out of the picture, allowing Osborn in his guise as the Iron Patriot and the rest of his villainous group to run amok in Asgard. This all comes about through Loki's manipulations, allowing Osborn to finally present the home of the Asgardians as a veritable threat worth attacking to the unassuming American public.

Two members of these Dark Avengers are the Sentry and the God of War Ares, the former of which was already mentally unhinged before teaming up with the former Green Goblin. This is made worse when Osborn has Sentry's wife killed, using the trauma to bend him to his will. Now incredibly loyal to Osborn, the Sentry pledges to defeat anyone who threatens him. One such threat is that of Ares himself, who turns on the team after realizing the truth behind Osborn's raid. Not wanting Ares to hurt Norman Osborn, the Sentry quickly rips Ares apart, akin to the fatalities of the Mortal Kombat series.

Ares would stay dead for years in the Marvel Universe, but the act itself was quite gruesome on its own. Not only was this level of blood and guts theretofore mostly unseen out of the Marvel MAX books or some stories in the Ultimate Universe, but such a stomach-churning defeat was given to a literal god. Given The Sentry's being a sort of twisted Superman or Captain Marvel/Shazam, the move's use in a later DC film actually makes perfect sense.

Black Adam Uses The Sentry's Siege Fatality On Sabbac

Black-Adam-Sabbac (1)

In the climax of Black Adam, the title antihero escapes from Amanda Waller's prison, reclaiming his powers to defend Kahndaq against the demonic Sabbac. Said creature kills Dr. Fate and throws around the Justice Society member like a ragdoll. Thankfully, Black Adam is able to return the violent favor to his opponent, giving just as good as he gets. Finally relenting to a bit of his rage, Black Adam lures the weakened Sabbac into the sky before ripping him in half.

This move is just like what the Sentry does to Ares in the comics, albeit with one major change. Siege was somewhat controversial due to how violent Ares' death was, namely due to the aforementioned organs flying every which way. In Sabbac's case, his innards are merely demonic hellfire, ironically making for a much less disturbing death. Black Adam is a Shazam villain traditionally, and he's now positioned as something of a dark Superman. This only increases the similarities to The Sentry, who was essentially just Marvel's ripoff of Miracleman before the company got the rights to that character. Miracleman himself was based on Fawcett's Captain Marvel/Shazam, making Black Adam's brutal movie killer move something of a full-circle fatality.

The DCEU film Black Adam is currently playing in theatres.
