Production on the DC Extended Universe film Black Adam is officially underway.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson -- who plays Black Adam himself -- announced the start of filming in a post to Instagram, featuring a photo of a clapboard with the Black Adam logo on it. "History in the making, extremely excited and what a humbling moment to share with you," Johnson wrote. "Officially kicking off day one of filming our Black Adam."

The former WWE Champion continued, "Our Director and maestro, Jaume Collet-Serra. Our Academy Award nominee (Joker), Director of Photography, Lawrence Sher. We have an all star production crew -- incredibly talented, galvanized, committed and focused to raise the bar and deliver something special for the world. This one is an honor."

A spinoff of the 2019 DCEU film Shazam!, Black Adam follows Johnson's eponymous DC anti-hero -- the errant champion of the wizard Shazam who was granted powers before Billy Batson. The upcoming film will feature numerous members of the Justice Society of America, including Atom Smasher, Hawkman, Cyclone and Doctor Fate.

Black Adam was originally scheduled to open this December. However, it lost its initial release date after the start of production was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Late last month, Black Adam advertisements took over New York City's Times Square in order to announce a new release date: July 29, 2022.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Marwan Kenzari, Sarah Shahi, James Cusati-Moyer and Bodhi Sabongui. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
