Black Adam actor Aldis Hodge, who's portraying Hawkman, offered his thoughts on the importance of representation in superhero movies.

"I think about the representation aspect of that because I didn’t grow up watching superheroes that look like me," Hodge explained to Geeks of Color. "I remember in my early teens we came into Spawn and Blade, and that was awesome. So, to know that young kids are going to be able to see that and see an opportunity, and have an awareness that I didn’t have at a young age about what they can accomplish, that really is fantastic."

Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dennis Neville for Flash Comics #1 in 1940, Hawkman started out as archaeologist Carter Hall, the reincarnation of the ancient Egyptian prince Khufu. However, the character has been reimagined several times by DC Comics over the years and is sometimes Katar Hol, an alien warrior from the planet Thanagar. Hodge will reportedly play the Carter Hall version of Hawkman in Black Adam.

Hawkman is one of many superheroes in the Justice Society of America who will face off against Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe film. Other JSA members in the movie include Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Sarah Shahi is also co-starring in the film and is rumored to be playing Black Adam's comic book love interest, Isis.

Black Adam was originally scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 22.; however, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film was unable to begin production in 2020. Subsequently, Black Adam lost its release date as part of Warner Bros.' changes to its slate of developing DC Extended Universe movies.

While discussing his workout program for the film, Johnson recently announced Black Adam will begin shooting in Spring 2021. Elsewhere, Hodge revealed his research material for the movie includes JSA and Hawkman comic books written by Geoff Johns, Robert Vendetti, David S. Goyer, Stephen Sadowski, Michael Bair, Carlos Pacheco, Jesus Merino, Rags Morales, James Robinson, Paul Smith, and Peter Snejbjerg.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell and Sarah Shahi. The film has yet to receive a release date.
