Last month’s news that DC Comics villain the Penguin had reportedly been dropped as the central villain of the Birds of Prey film left a noticeably antagonist-shaped hole in the film. Now, though, word has got out that another villain might be set to take Oswald Cobblepot’s place.
According to TheWrap, that villain is none other than the Black Mask, a career criminal with a penchant for masks. Birds of Prey will reportedly assemble a team of villains and heroes -- Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, Renee Montoya and Harley Quinn -- to go up against a sizable threat in Gotham City. Now, we seemingly know the identity of that threat.
First debuting in Batman #386 in 1985, Black Mask, whose real name is Roman Sionis, is the creation of Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake. A failed businessman, Roman took to a life of crime and adopted the Black Mask persona when his family’s fortunes crumbled around him through his own ineptitude. Unable perceive his own folly, Black Mask lashed out at those he perceived as responsible, namely Bruce Wayne. Black Mask is the founder of the criminal False Face Society.
Birds of Prey is directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson. Margot Robbie has been confirmed to return as Harley Quinn. Production is expected to begin in early 2019.
