For the past few weeks, we've been hearing more and more reports and rumors coming out of Warner Bros.' planned Birds of Prey movie. It started with a confirmation of the movie's cast of characters, which includes Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya, and was then followed with casting rumors, which have included Mission: Impossible - Fallout's Vanessa Kirby, Killing Eve's Jodie Comer and Baywatch's Alexandra Daddario.
Now, a new rumor has recently surfaced in the form of a potential synopsis for the film. After seemingly confirming the previous rumor that the Penguin was dropped as the villain of the film, Discussing Film reports that the Birds of Prey will come together to save Cassandra Cain. According to the source, the synopsis of the film reads as follows:
"After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes – Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya – come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord."
While being far from a confirmation, this rumored synopsis would seem to have a bit of traction. When it was previously reported that Cassandra Cain would be involved in the film, it was difficult to say how the former Batgirl would factor into the movie. But having her being a young girl in need of saving would make a lot of sense, all while setting up her role as Orphan in future potential films.
What's also interesting to note in this rumored synopsis is the mention that Harley Quinn and The Joker are no longer a couple. 2016's Suicide Squad showed the abusive relationship between the two, and went even further by hinting at Harley potentially looking to move away from that relationship. Having her on the outs with the Clown Prince of Crime would certainly position her as a character who can stand on her own, all while embracing her heroic side.
Described by actress Margot Robbie as an "R-rated girl gang film," Birds of Prey could easily see its titular heroines brought together by happenstance to come to the aid of a little girl. But, until the movie starts shooting next year, it's best to take this synopsis with a grain of salt... for now.
Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) and written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee). Margot Robbie has been confirmed to be returning as Harley Quinn, and production is expected to begin in early 2019.
