The first big screen version of Black Canary is to set appear in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) as portrayed by Jurnee Smollett-Bell. Recently, the actor named the video game Injustice 2 as an influence for her Black Canary, specifically for the Canary Cry.
"I drew a lot of inspiration for the Canary Cry from the Black Canary in Injustice 2," the shared. "Even physically. For me, I really wanted to make it primal... It's not something she uses, it's something she's trying to hide. So to get to that point, she has to rev herself up. It's such a guttural point and a guttural place."
Injustice 2 initially premiered on May 11, 2017 and featured a variety of popular DC characters, including Aquaman, Blue Beetle, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and many more. The game is available on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows.
Black Canary is well-known for her Canary Cry, which is an ultrasonic scream the hero can produce. The character appears in several other video games in addition to Injustice 2, including Justice League Heroes and Batman: The Brave and the Bold – The Videogame.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Ella Jay Basco, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film opens Feb. 7.
