While the monsters of Netflix's blockbuster film Bird Box are too psychologically damaging for the film's characters to look at, thy were apparently too scary for audiences too, and never actually appeared on-screen in the film.

Now, thanks some reported behind-the-scenes photos  on Instagram, you can finally look at Bird Box's baby-like monsters for yourself.

These images were posted by SFX Atlas, a group that curates impressive practical special effects. The creature itself was created at KNB EFX Group, a special effects studio that's worked on productions like The Walking Dead and The Chronicles of Narnia series. The Instagram post goes on to credit Andy Bergholtz, who sculpted and pre-painted the prosthetics and  Stephen Prouty, who went to set and applied the makeup on actor Dirk Rogers.

The photos show three points-of-view on some remarkable make-up and practical effect design. They show a creepy head, somehow both too old and too young. Beady-eyed, toothless and hairless like a baby, but full of wrinkles and black, uncanny veins that criss-cross the whole head down to the neck like the crust on a desert floor.

While the creature never shows up on camera in the film, it is interesting to know that there was a design in mind. Also in the Instagram post is a comment from special make-up effects creator Howard Berger, ''It’s always a bit disappointing when so much effort goes into something that ends up in the cutting room floor, but I get it and it’s always what is best for the final product."

Bird Box, for those who have managed to avoid the cultural sensation, is a horror film that was released on Netflix on December 21st, 2018.In the film, Sandra Bullock's character blindly guides two small children through nature and protects them from creatures that cause people to kill themselves on sight. Based on a 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, the movie had the best opening week of any Netflix original film ever.

While last year's A Quiet Place, a similarly-premised story about creatures guided by sound, that teased them in glimpses before showing them outright to great effect, fans were divided by the decision to keep these monsters out of Bird Box. Even though one deleted scene that featured the creature reportedly ended up looking "more unintentionally comical than scary," the creature looks quite impressive in the above photo.
