With the latest slate of HBO Max, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy has finally returned to mainstream screens. What many new fans may be surprised to learn, however, is the fact that the protagonists in this series aren't always the good guys. In the twisted world of Billy & Mandy, horrific things can happen for absolutely no reason, the main characters can show random albeit hilarious displays of cartoon violence, and – more often than not – the voices of reason are the supposed monsters themselves.

In a series that often focuses on the disgruntled embodiment of death, a destructive nitwit, and one of the meanest girls ever shown on television, even terrifying monsters with razor sharp claws will look much nicer by comparison.

10 Lord Pain

Lord Pain in the Video Game

For someone who claims to be from the "Plane of Eternal Suffering," Lord Pain is an oddly cooperative and agreeable guy. Actually coming from the Plane of Happy Ponies, Lord Pain traveled to Grim's world to be under his tutelage. Though he tried to fight and strike menace as part of his servitude, Lord Pain often found himself simply hanging out with Billy and Grim.

Even when he came under Mandy's command, he was simply used to make mashed potatoes. In a later episode, he even helped Billy vent out his deep seeded need to destroy things by taking him to the actual Plane of Eternal Suffering. For a demonic warrior of punishment, Lord Pain is one helpful guy.

9 Nergal

Nergal and Aunt Sis

Nergal is a malicious demon from the center of the Earth who, if he ever wanted to, could just take over the entire planet. However, he doesn't actually want that. Seemingly the only one of his kind and finding the Earth's core rather lonely, all Nergal ever wants throughout the series is to make friends.

He initially tries to befriend the main characters and later marries Billy's aunt to start his own family. With her, the two start an idyllic family akin to 1950's sitcoms, with Nergal playing the doting, wise father.

8 Nergal, Jr.

Junior holding Thromnambular

The son to Nergal's daddy ways, Nergal, Jr. is every bit as insecure and timid as Nergal could be. Much like his father, Nergal, Jr. is a pretty nice boy until he's provoked. Before then, he simply tries to befriend people and work through their issues. His debut episode even had him try to make friends with the other kids, much like his father, though his demonic side did manage to seep through.

From then on, Nergal, Jr. just tries to act as a nice friend to all and a cousin to Billy, going as far as to cooperate with some of Billy's school exploits. If people can manage to just be nice to the kid, Nergal, Jr. is one of the friendliest demons that someone could stumble upon.

7 Squid Hat

Dean Toadblatt and Squid Hat get Married

While Harry Potter has the wise cracking, weathered Sorting Hat, Billy & Mandy has the slimy but still ever snappy Squid Hat to sort out its magical schools' students. Played by Weird Al Yankovic, Squid Hat is one of the lead administrators of Dean Toadblatt's School of Sorcery.

He can often be seen besides the grumpy toad as a close friend and partner in education. Far from a menace to anyone without a seafood allergy, Squid Hat is even nicer than the very piece of fabric that he's meant to parody.

6 The Bride Of Frankenstein

Grim Meets His Heroes

One doesn't often see homages to classic horror, especially within children's cartoons. However, in response to the rise of slashes and masked villains within modern horror, Billy & Mandy had an entire episode where Grim tried to get some spooky monsters back their groove.

And while geriatric beasts like the Wolfman or Dracula were disagreeable, Grim at least had a nice old lady like the Bride of Frankenstein to work with. Anything but a malevolent, brooding creature, the Bride was pure embodiment of an agreeable, old lady who simply went along with everybody's plans as if she were humoring her own grandchildren.

5 Baron Von Ghoulish

Baron Von Ghoulish

Baron Von Ghoulish was only a temporary character that was part of the big Christmas special, but the series really could've used more of his vampiric sass. Initially thought to be the highest ranking vampire, Baron Von Ghoulish was a North Pole residing bloodsucker who simply wanted to keep a clean house together.

He joined the main characters on their journey to save Santa purely because of his childhood dream to save Christmas. Rather than a raving monster, the Baron was simply caddy and squeamish whenever the slightest mess was made. Given that he became the prime solution to the Claus' chore woes, Baron Von Ghoulish was anything but a menace to society.

4 Cragera

Grim and Cragera

Cragera is far from the destructive kaiju that even monsters like Godzilla started out as. Rather, he parodied the new line of Japanese giant monsters that acted more as superheroes and after school special mascots. A direct homage to Gamera, Cragera was a flying, turtle monster with lasers and jets that fought to defend the world and could even be powered up with the power of children singing.

He fought alongside the main characters to take on the destructive Kittyra but inevitably felt bad for his enemy once Mandy herself was brought in to handle the giant cat. When a giant, mutant turtle like Cragera can feel empathy and someone like Mandy can't, there's something twisted going on in the writing.

3 Shnissugah

Shnissugah Home Page

A lot of people are afraid of snakes, with some even fearing the discovery of a giant, man eating that could disrupt society as people know it. This was the exact goal of one group of nerd's in Billy and Mandy's school when they had enough of their constant bullying. Arranging an entire, snake cult dedicated to using snakes against popular kids, The Secret Snake Club conspired to summon the great, powerful, Canadian snake Shnissugah to wreak havoc on their school.

With the power of Grim's scythe and some "high speed" internet, they were able to do so, only to discover that Shnissugah wasn't just a tiny garden snake, but a sympathetic creature that didn't like the fact that they tied up Mandy.

2 Fred Fredburger

Fred Fred Burger

Fred Fredburger is the least intimidating creature in all of Billy & Mandy. A simple, green demon, all that Fred Fredburger is guilty of is being annoying and a fan of the Grim Reaper. Besides that, he's a pretty fun guy who only ever wants to grab snacks, namely nachos and frozen yogurt.

It was his exact innocence that drove the judge in "Keeper of the Reaper" to create a seemingly neutral ruling to keep Grim, Mandy, and Billy together. He was also primed to be one of the prime heroes of a spinoff series in the series' final special Underfist: Halloween Bash.

1 Jeff The Spider

Jeff the Spider

For a demonic creature that came out of Grim's iconic, cursed chest, Jeff the Spider is a pretty cool guy. Only ever acting as a model citizen and as Billy's doting, adopted son, Jeff has consistently tried to do nice deeds for the main characters, including cleaning up after them, cooking them their favorite foods, and going along with any of their plans.

Even when he becomes angry, he can't really bring himself to hurt anybody – though he did kidnap Billy for a time. Other than this, Jeff is likely the nicest character in the entire series who is a model example of the type of humanitarian (or spider-tarian) that more people should aspire to be.
