WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Shazam #12 by Jeff Loveness, Brandon Peterson, Mike Atiyeh and Rob Leigh, available now.

In Shazam! #12, young Billy Batson pays a visit to Gotham City in an effort to go after bigger and better villains. Naturally, it doesn't take long for him to find trouble in Gotham City, as the Scarecrow is plotting another attack. Although Shazam rushes in to stop him, Billy lets his guard down, and the villain injects him with a dose of fear gas. In this state, with his powerful abilities, Shazam could have turned into terrible danger. Thankfully, Batman arrives just in time to snap him out of it.

After the two superheroes team up and defeat the villain, Batman uses that opportunity to discipline the teenager. But he also shows his softer side by going easy on him, establishing a connection with him, and even sneaking in a jab at Superman. While the team-up between the two is brief, this story highlights just how similar Billy Batson is to Batman's other partners, and it makes a strong case for why Billy Batson could easily be Batman's sidekick.

Over his lengthy history, Batman has had many sidekicks. from Robins like Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne to other young heroes like Duke Thomas, Batgirl, Orphan, Batwing and Gotham Girl. While it's not the case for all of these characters, Bruce Wayne does have an affinity for mentoring young orphans who are hurting but who have something to prove. After all, this was the case with his first three Robins: Dick, Jason, and Tim.

When it comes to orphans with a powerful drive and a heroic side, Billy Batson certainly fits that category. Before he was taken by his foster family, Billy was mostly on his own. Plus, with the power inside of him and the inherent goodness that earned him those powers, Billy is exactly the type of young superhero Batman sees potential in. That much is clear in Shazam! #12, when Bruce gives Billy advice on taking the time to figure out what kind of person he is in addition to figuring out what kind out superhero he wants to be.

With the levels of Shazam's powers, it seems like Bruce would want to make certain Billy grows up to put those powers to the best use possible. This is, after all, what Batman did with one of his more recent sidekicks Gotham Girl. Gotham Girl had superpowers not unlike those of Superman and Shazam, and Batman took her in to help shape her future. He could have easily chosen to do the same with young Billy -- not necessarily by taking him away from his young family -- by offering him guidance and mentorship in a way that no other veteran heroes really have, even Superman.

Taken together, all of this might sound like the makings of an Elseworlds story, but Bruce Wayne has more experience with anyone in shaping the lives of young heroes. Plus. Captain Marvel's signature color is already red, much like the costumes of his Robin sidekicks.

Having someone as powerful as Billy helping in Batman's crusade to save Gotham City would surely make a big difference in the Dark Knight's life too. While Shazam's raw power by his side, Batman could potentially make some lasting changes in taking out the criminals Gotham City.

While their partnership is sadly short here, the team-up between Billy and Bruce in Shazam! #12 has made us realize there is a kinship between the two that, in another reality, could have created an amazingly different kind of Dynamic Duo.
