Bill Maher was on Larry King Now recently and elaborated on the controversial blog post he uploaded regarding comic book culture and former Marvel editor and publisher Stan Lee, who passed away last Monday.

The comedian and political commentator said that he just found out about the negative backlash his comments have received from professional creators and fans, and that such reactions have only cemented his point. He acknowledges that his comments weren’t a swipe against Stan Lee, calling himself “agnostic” about the former Marvel icon, but that his comments were more about current comic book culture and its popularity today.

“A culture that thinks that comic books and comic book movies are profound meditations on the human condition is a dumb fucking culture.” His online post titled Adulting reads. “I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to suggest that Donald Trump could only get elected in a country that thinks comic books are important.”

Yesterday Stan Lee’s company POW! Entertainment released an open letter in response to Maher’s comments. Meanwhile, fans and creators alike continue to express their frustration, disgust and, in some cases, ironic humor (in regards to how the comments have united many different fandoms with the common theme of disagreement) on multiple social media platforms.
