Aliens: Dark Descent has drawn a lot of comparisons with the much-beloved XCOM franchise. Its sci-fi setting, individual marine and equipment management, and crushing permadeath mechanic are all similar to the turn-based masterpiece. The fact that players can also momentarily slow down Aliens' real-time strategy gameplay to issue commands and manage scenarios will also appeal to XCOM fans. The most notable is the introduction of a stress meter that forces players to realize the mental toll that each mission takes on the marines who partake. The game's developers also say they're keen to balance the strategic gameplay with horror themes that will create a real sense of urgency and fear among those who play. It's certainly an exciting title for fans of both horror and strategy games.

Releasing June 22 for PlayStation 5

Final Fantasy XVI was arguably one of the most anticipated games of 2023. It's the first numbered installment in the iconic franchise since 2016's divisive Final Fantasy XV. Therefore, it has a lot to live up to if it wants to recement the franchise's place at the top of the JRPG genre. It's certainly another step away from the franchise's roots in turn-based combat, becoming a full action-RPG with real-time combat. It seems to have improved these systems massively from XV, making combat familiar enough to the franchise, but also ensuring there's enough depth to it to keep the gameplay fresh and engaging.

The story is also shaping up to be a gripping, twisting epic akin to the likes of Game of Thrones, with darker, more adult themes. Early impressions of the game praise the main protagonist, Clive, for his intriguing story and character arc. By combining a strong plot and cast of characters with more fleshed-out gameplay, Final Fantasy XVI could be the grand return to form that fans are hoping for.
