Netflix released a trippy trailer for its upcoming French science-fiction comedy film, Bigbug.
From Amélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Bigbug is set in the year 2050 and, according to the official synopsis, follows a "group of bickering suburbanites" who are locked inside their house by their "well-intentioned household robots" for their own safety during an uprising of "Yonyx" androids. Directed and co-written by Jeunet, with co-writer Guillaume Laurant, Bigbug is slated to release exclusively on Netflix Feb. 11.
Bigbug takes place during a time when artificial intelligence is widely available to the common civilian, with the trailer depicting how humans now rely on their household androids for the most basic tasks. This includes anything from opening cans, vacuuming, playing rock-paper-scissors, to seeing humanity's raunchiest fantasies come to life.
Jeunet's first feature film since 2013's The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet, Bigbug began filming in October 2020 despite the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The colorful dystopian comedy will star Dominique Pinon, Elsa Zylberstein, Isabelle Nanty, Youssef Hajdi, Alban Lenoir and François Levantal.
In a 2019 interview with IndieWire, Jeunet discussed the challenge of financing a film like Bigbug and what would inevitably lead him to turn to Netflix. "I have a story I want to make as a movie about artificial intelligence, but it's difficult to find the money because it’s a comedy with robots," he said at the time. "So maybe it'll be for Netflix, who knows. As a last resort, I will try Netflix."
Bigbug premieres on Netflix Feb. 11.
