WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Big Sky Season 1, Episode 9, "Let It Be Him," now available on ABC.

ABC's Big Sky threw fans for a loop when it was revealed the sinister Montana state trooper, Rick, was alive after the midseason break. He's been suffering from amnesia after being shot in the head, leaving everyone trying to jog his memory as his former partner, Ron, is loose and still kidnapping people. However, the latest episode brings the curtains down for Rick as he's killed off with a very shocking twist.

Rick's in the ICU, trying to recollect his memories, but his wife, Merrilee, thinks he's faking it. She has good reason to believe that, as he keeps tapping a beat, which indicates he's familiar with songs from the last few years. More so, there are tics she picked up from their marriage, indicating he's within his senses. As a result, Merrilee brings his hammer from home and starts chiding him at his bedside.

No one's around, so Merrilee lets it all out, admitting she knew weeks ago he was going to bludgeon her to death with the hammer. He lied and said he was fixing a painting on the wall while she slept, but Merrilee admits she's been in denial. Now, as she stares into his cold eyes, she can tell his soul's dead and there's a liar underneath. Plus, she's tired over all the pain he's caused, especially as he killed Cody when the P.I. came to investigate the missing girls.

Most of all, she's frustrated she was lied to and played by him, as well as Ron, feeling like a joke as two serial killers made her fall for them. When she tries to strike him, he blocks it, making a snide comment about her menopause. This is where he fails the test, as she just wanted to see if his dark side was there. While it seems like she's going to pull back and let the cops know, Merrilee takes justice into her own hands and smashes his head in repeatedly.

She knows his lawyer, Penelope, is pleading to have him placed in a mental institute, but Merrilee doesn't want the monster alive. She takes the hammer to his skull, and as she's arrested, leaving his bloody corpse behind, she can't help but smile.

It's bittersweet as she's been broken, angry for staying with him for so long while accepting this as her penance. The unfortunate thing is Rick really didn't recover his memory fully as he was getting dreams of kidnapped victims, apologizing to them without knowing what he really did. Merrilee overheard him saying sorry, and it's what tripped her, but ultimately, they were ghosts he was still piecing together before his wife's patience ran out and she killed him.

Big Sky stars Katheryn Winnick, Ryan Phillips, Kylie Bunbury, Brian Geraghty and Valerie Mahaffey. It will resume April 13, with the remaining seven episodes airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
