'Big Bang Theory's' Jim Parsons to Star in 'Elf' Animated Special

Fans might be used to seeing Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons playing the cold, analytical Dr. Sheldon Cooper, but he'll be lightening way up this holiday season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has been tapped by NBC to fill Will Ferrell's boots vocally in the animated special Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas.

A film about a human raised in the North Pole who travels to New York City to meet his father, Elf was released in 2003 and quickly became a holiday classic. For the animated special, Ed Asner will reprise his role as Santa to retell the story of the movie. The Warner Bros. Animation production will include eight songs, including "Nobody Cares About Santa" and "Happy All the Time."

The voice cast also includes Mark Hamill, Fred Armisen, Jay Leno, Matt Lauer, Rachael MacFarlane, Gilbert Gottfried and Steve Higgins. Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas debuts Dec. 16.
