The Big Bang Theory was a popular sitcom that ran for 12 seasons that often featured its main characters discussing and analyzing areas of popular culture. One of these discussions stemmed from the time Sheldon Cooper shared his favorite movie Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark with his girlfriend, Amy Farrah Fowler. She had never seen the film before, so during Season 7, Episode 4 "The Raiders Minimization," he has her watch it.

However, after the couple finishes the movie, Amy gives her honest opinion of what she thought of it and shakes Sheldon to his core, literally causing his jaw to drop. With that said, let's look at what Amy said about Raiders of the Lost Ark and if it's at all accurate.

What Did Amy Say About Raiders of the Lost Ark?

The Big Bang Theory Amy Fowler and Sheldon Cooper

After finishing, Raiders of the Lost Arc Amy tells Sheldon that she enjoyed the film despite its "glaring story problem." This comment stops Sheldon in his tracks because he's seen the film 36 times and never noticed a single problem. And since Sheldon is who he is, he believes if he's never picked up on an issue, there couldn't possibly be one.

Regardless of how her boyfriend feels, Amy still does her best to explain that she feels like "Indiana Jones plays no role in the outcome of the story." He doesn't stop the Nazis from finding the arc, even though he gets the medallion from Marion before them, and they decide to open it without any influence, which leads to their ultimate destruction. Amy assesses that "If [Jones] weren’t in the film, it would turn out exactly the same," which completely shatters Sheldon's perception of one of his favorite movies.

Was Amy Right About Raiders of the Lost Ark?

In some ways, Amy's discovery of the irrelevance of Jones' impact on Raiders of the Lost Ark's story is hard to un-see, and fans may have a hard time getting past it during their next viewing. However, the film is made up of more than just a plot -- the iconic characters, stunning cinematography and memorable music all play a part in why it's become so iconic. Sure, Jones may not impact the story in a major way, but he's still a memorable hero.

Jones has stayed firmly planet within the pop culture zeitgeist because of his values. He believes that artifacts should be respected and is anti-Nazi, which goes a long way in today's world. Jones also saves Marion's life, and because she appears throughout the film and has an impact felt by the other characters, it can be argued he left his mark by saving her.

Regardless, there's more to a great movie than the basic plot beats, and that means Amy's observation about Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark can't ruin what is one of the greatest films of all time. Her claim that Indy essentially does not influence the plot of the movie is technically correct, but there's just more to it than that.
