WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the latest episode of The Big Bang Theory, "The Maternal Conclusion," which aired Thursday on CBS.
Every major character on The Big Bang Theory has found love. Penny and Leonard are together, Howard and Bernadette have started a family and even Sheldon, of all people, married Amy. Yes, all of them have found their happily ever after -- except for Raj.
Throughout the CBS' hit sitcom's twelve-year run, Raj has had it rough. It took him nearly six seasons before he could even speak to women without being drunk, and since then, he has had quite a few relationships, though none have lasted very long. However, in The Big Bang Theory's twelfth season, Raj finally found a potential bride in Anu.
Now, in the sitcom's second-to-last episode, "The Maternal Conclusion," Raj finally gets the big romantic movie moment he's always wanted -- but it's not with Anu. It's with his best friend, Howard.
Over the years, the series has shown some of Raj's interests, and tastes, differ from those of this friends. For example, while they're all fans of sci-fi films, he's the only one of the group who enjoys a good romantic comedy. He's such a fan of these big romantic films, it only seems right that he receives an epic happy ending worthy of the movies he loves. But his relationship with Anu is anything but that. It started off as an arranged marriage and, after some ups and downs, the two decided to date for real, even though Anu doesn't appear to be the right match for him.
In the latest episode, Anu travels to London for a conference, only to be offered a permanent position there. Naturally, this puts the whole relationship in question. Raj, who sees Anu as his one chance to start a family, decides to travel to London, where he will propose. If she says yes, he will move there, leaving his friends and job behind -- even if Anu doesn't understand any of his references to the romantic film Notting Hill.
Before he can leave however, Howard rushes to the airport and meets Raj at the gate. As his best friend, he sees that Anu isn't the right woman for him. He tells him Raj deserves to be with someone else, someone who understands his Notting Hill references.
Essentially, Howard meets Raj at the gate to stop him from making a big mistake. The scene plays out exactly like a classic rom-com situation -- where a character makes a big display of emotion at an airport gate, stopping the person they love from leaving and making a big mistake. This is the type of gesture Raj deserves, from someone who truly understands him, and sets the stage for his story to receive a genuinely romantic ending.
At the end of the episode, it appears as if his relationship with Anu is over, but that doesn't mean it's the end for Raj's dreams. He has two more episodes to find the woman he will spend the rest of his life with -- someone he may have already met.
The Big Bang Theory airs Thursdays at 8 pm ET/PT on CBS, and will conclude with an hour-long series finale on May 16. The series stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Mayim Bialik, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg and Melissa Rauch.
