Big Bang Theory star Mayim Bialik made a shocking revelation about the real reason why she first auditioned for The Big Bang Theory - she needed the health insurance!

Appearing on The Social, a Canadian talk show similar to The Talk, on CTV Television Network, to promote her new sitcom, Call Me Kat, the actor discussed how she was pressed into acting again to secure health insurance following her doctorate in neuroscience.

Years before she played Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, Bialik started her career as an actor in the late 1980s, securing her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) membership for an appearance in an episode of the TV series, Beauty and the Beast.

After appearing in a few other shows (including the final episode of The Facts of Life, as part of an aborted spinoff series from that show about Blair becoming the new head of the Eastland School, with Seth Green and Juliette Lewis as other students) and a memorable appearance in Beaches as the younger version of Bette Midler's character, Bialik found stardom as the lead character in the sitcom, Blossom, which ran from 1991-1995.

After securing a deferral to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while on Blossom, Bialik earned a B.S. degree in neuroscience from UCLA in 2000. She minored in Hebrew and Jewish studies. She took a break from her studies in 2005 to return to acting, but then received a Ph.D. degree in neuroscience in 2007 from UCLA.

As she related on the program, "I'm sure you all in the north can understand that I was running out of health insurance, because that's not considered a right in this country. So I literally figure - I mean, I had a toddler and a newborn, and I had been a grad student and my insurance was expiring. This is a true story. And I figured if I can just get even a couple jobs like here or there, I'll be able to get insurance again. I did not expect to be a regular on a television show. I had been teaching neuroscience. I've tutored Hebrew. I've tutored piano. I wear a lot of hats, you know. And I eventually auditioned for this show called the Big Bang Theory, which I had never seen and it changed my life and I got insurance."
