The Big Bang Theory has been great about showing characters with different personalities despite almost all of them being “nerdy” in nature. Leonard forms a third of the main trio of the show, which includes Sheldon and Penny, and him being an engaging character was vital for The Big Bang Theory to become the success it now is.

As the show will be over within just a couple weeks or so, it’s time to finish off all of the loose strings and leave the fans as satisfied as possible. With Leonard, there are still several things we want to see happen before the show comes to a close. Here are 10 of those things.

10 He Should Confront His Mother

We’ve had a dozen or so episodes where Leonard tells his mother off for not treating him the way a mother should toward her son, but every single time, her next appearance has her once again being the same, cold person.

In her last appearance, Leonard should have an actual, definite confrontation where he makes it clear that he doesn’t want to be treated like a science project and for his mother to finally become a loving person toward him. After this, there should be no more distance from Beverly, and she should become warm and welcoming toward Leonard. The final time we see Leonard and Beverly together should have them be united and should be totally devoid of jokes at Leonard’s expense.

9 He Should Confront Penny

Speaking of jokes at his expense, Leonard has always been treated unfairly by his own wife as well. Ever since they’ve been married, Penny has made backhanded comments about how Leonard has been the one to luck out by becoming her spouse.

Leonard should confront Penny head-on about how being this snide toward her own husband is not how one should be around their spouse, and more importantly, that he should be treated with respect. He should make it clear to Penny that they are together in their marriage, and every time she makes an offhanded remark toward him, she’s undermining their relationship—this should hopefully lead toward a happy resolution between the two.

8 He Should Confront Leslie Winkle

Leonard might be such a pushover because he let everyone shove him down whenever they wanted. As far as relationships go, it was Leslie Winkle who first treated him like he was disposable. Leonard has come a long way since then, as he’s set in his career and has been settled down for years, unlike Leslie. The last time we saw them together in Season 10, Leslie took a shot at his lifestyle even then. There should be one more meeting between these two where Leonard definitively shows Leslie how much better off he is without her—and, more significantly—how he isn’t disposable.

7 He Should Be Respected By Sheldon

Leonard really deserves to have Sheldon finally stop being so stuck-up around him for what he does. It’s another matter when his love interests didn’t take him seriously, but Sheldon is a guy who’s been calling Leonard his best friend for 16 years, and the fact that he rips to shreds everything Leonard has worked for is downright cruel.

Sheldon should come upon the realization that he’s treated Leonard very unkindly and be the one to tell him he respects him. Rather than a confrontation, Sheldon should surprise Leonard with this declaration as it’ll validate Sheldon’s claims rather than it being a response to Leonard being upset.

6 He Should Make A Scientific Breakthrough

Although Leonard has settled into his work for a decade now, we’ve never seen him make any kind of breakthrough. The most we saw was him going off to the North Sea and accomplishing absolutely nothing, so it’s fair to say his research might not be the best among his peers. While it’s certainly a longshot for this to happen (as Sheldon and Amy are the ones with the research breakthrough storyline this season), Leonard can still happen upon some kind of research that brings him the respect of his peers. In the ideal scenario, Leonard should be the one to prove Sheldon and Amy’s research and share credit with them for the Nobel prize.

5 He Should Accept Himself

We can have every character that’s ever been on the show come up to Leonard and say from the heart that Leonard is the most perfect person out there, but if he doesn’t believe it himself, then it’s all for nothing.

Leonard’s biggest hang-up has been that he doesn’t think of himself as anyone spectacular. While every other character on the show prides themselves upon something, Leonard has always been self-deprecating. Before the end, Leonard should accept himself for all his flaws, and realize that he’s still a very good person no matter how he turned out, and that he shouldn’t think of himself as less than any of his friends.

4 He Should Get A New Job

With the scientific breakthrough we mentioned above should come the opportunity for new employment. Let’s face it, Leonard really hasn’t stood out at Caltech, so his leaving wouldn't be a great loss to anyone or even to himself. As the finale should be about moving on, Leonard should accept a new job somewhere else that sees him carry out a brand-new kind of research that could change the world. This should coincide with Penny’s own change of heart about her job, and the two should move away to someplace fresh where Leonard thrives in his new work. It’ll finally spring him up to the big leagues and give him something to be proud about.

3 He Should Have One More Adventure With The Guys

This season has had painfully few moments between the guys of the group. We haven’t realized how slowly the show has had these boys move away from each other as they’ve settled into their family lives, but we certainly do want them to have one more adventure with each other.

The earlier episodes of the show had these boys constantly enveloped in some sort of hijinks, and it’ll be a wonderful final nod toward what the show was based on by having fans witness them stuck in another situation. These moments bring out the funniest in all these guys, so it’ll be an episode to remember.

2 He Should Take Charge

Before his character was watered down as the series progressed, fans will recall that Leonard actually used to be the leader of the group. The guys would follow whatever he had in mind, and they all even switched to hanging out with Priya, as Leonard was the one who led them away because he was dating her. Nowadays, Leonard is mainly the lackey to someone like Sheldon or Penny, which means it’ll be a wonderful change of pace—and a final application of the traditional status quo—by having Leonard take charge. It’ll also provide him with the confidence that has been severely lacking in him.

1 He Should Become A Father

If we were to ask Leonard himself what he wants most in life, it would probably be the chance to become a father. Penny was quite awful to him by basically forcing Leonard to give up his dream of having a child without ever discussing all this before they got married. The ending should have Leonard either already being a father or on the way to becoming one. This shouldn’t be shown as an unplanned pregnancy, rather it should be a mature decision on the part of Penny. The first thing Leonard pictured when he saw Penny was their future children, and him realizing this fantasy would be the perfect send-off.
