The Thanksgiving Decoupling

Big Bang Theory Thanksgiving

The official kick-off of the holiday season starts with the day we give thanks. In "The Thanksgiving Decoupling," Mrs. Wolowitz invites Howard and his friends home for a big Thanksgiving dinner. While Sheldon initially objects (as he usually does), the entire gang eventually makes it to Mrs. Wolowitz's house. And, like any big family gathering, it leads to plenty of drama.

In one corner of the house, Penny discovers she accidentally married her ex-boyfriend Zack during a trip to Las Vegas, and Raj, Amy and Bernadette, who are busy cooking Thanksgiving dinner (or sneak-eating marshmallows), enjoy every minute of Penny and Leonard's big confrontation. In the living room, Howard tries to bond with his father-in-law, but Mike only ends up establishing a connection with Sheldon. The two share beers, and The Big Bang Theory has us eternally thankful for a hilariously drunk Sheldon Cooper.

The Santa Simulation

Sheldon isn't exactly a big fan of Christmas. But in "The Santa Simulation," his best friend and roommate Leonard attempts to make him a believer by staging the merriest and brightest of Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. With Leonard as dungeon master, Stuart, Howard and Sheldon travel a medieval North Pole in search of Santa Claus, a perilous journey that leads to Sheldon caroling "Good King Wenceslas" and the trio playing "Jingle Bells" with actual bells.

And if all that fun weren't enough, the episode then reaches for the heartstrings when Sheldon finally "confronts" Santa Claus and reveals the reason he doesn't like Christmas is because of the loss of his grandfather. Like any good Christmas special, it brings cheer, laughter and a few unexpected tears.

The Cooper Extraction

It's a Wonderful Life is a Christmas classic that has inspired countless parodies. In the 1946 film, businessman George Bailey is shown by an angel what life might have been like if he had never existed. That's also the premise of The Big Bang Theory episode "The Cooper Extraction." While Sheldon is away in Texas for the birth of his niece, the rest of the gang takes advantage of his absence to decorate the apartment for Christmas.

However, while being without Sheldon has its undeniable benefits, Amy is quick to point out how all of their lives would be different were he not around. What follows is a series of "What if?" vignettes that depict an alternate world in which Leonard never met his best friend. Without Sheldon, there would be no Leonard and Penny, a deranged Howard would still be living with his mother, Amy would be all alone, Leonard and Raj would be overweight, and Stuart would ... well he'd still be Stuart. Truly, this episode reminds us there's nothing like the holidays to bring families together.

The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis

Big Bang Theory Bath Item Gift

"The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis" is perhaps The Big Bang Theory's most famous Christmas episode -- and with good reason. This is the fan-favorite outing from Season 2 that showed the Vulcan-like Sheldon Cooper was, in fact, human. After Penny lets her neighbors know she intends to give them Christmas presents, Sheldon goes on an elaborate quest to understand the concept of gift-giving and find an offering of equal value to whatever Penny presents to him.

Finally, he thinks he's found the perfect solution when he purchases bath-item gift baskets of all shapes and sizes, with the intent of giving her one and return the rest. However, all of that is thrown out the window when Penny gives him a priceless gift: Leonard Nimoy's signature on a Cheesecake Factory napkin used by the Star Trek icon. Unable to contain his excitement, Sheldon displays his humanity when he barges back into the room with all of the baskets. Then, when he deems all of that is not enough, he gives Penny her real gift: a warm hug. At this point in the series, Sheldon wasn't too big on physical interaction, which made the moment such a priceless gem -- a real Christmas miracle.

The Justice League Recombination

The holidays aren't just about Christmas. After the comforts and joys of Dec. 25, it's time to put on your best clothes, go to a party and ring in the New Year. As you get prepared, this will be the perfect time to re-watch The Big Bang Theory's "The Justice League Recombination." In the New Year's Eve special, Leonard, Howard, Raj and Sheldon participate in the comic book shop's annual costume party, which awards a prize to the best group costume.

Deciding to go as the (store-bought) Justice League, Leonard suits up as the Green Lantern, Sheldon becomes the Fastest Man Alive, Howard tries his best Batman impersonation, and Raj gets stuck with Aquaman's blond wig and pink seahorse. But this Justice League only grows more complete when Penny agrees to join in as Wonder Woman, and her then-boyfriend Zack makes a surprise appearance as Superman.

The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons on CBS. The series stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Mayim Bialik, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg and Melissa Rauch.
