The following contains spoilers for Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

While Betsy Braddock has faced off against all manner of threats over her long career as a superhero, she has rarely if ever dealt with as many as her time leading the Captain Britain Corps has afforded her. Surprisingly, even with an entire multiverse of enemies at her fingertips, those who have decided to cause her the most trouble are also the most recognizable. In fact, the latest of them is so recognizable that she might even replace Betsy without anyone ever knowing it.

Following a disastrous showing on national television, the titular hero of Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1 (by Tini Howard, Vasco Georgiev, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Ariana Maher) is called upon to help one of her fellow captains quell a devastating Fury attack. After investigating further, Betsy discovers that her mechanized foes have begun flying the Union Jack in secret, lending an unnerving personal layer to their villainous plot. Of course, that isn't the only part of these proceedings that hits close to home, especially not after Morgan le Fay steps up to reveal that she has acquired a Captain Britain of her very own.

Morgan Le Fay's history in the Marvel Universe stretches back further than most, both on and off the comic book page, with her first appearance in 1955's Black Knight #1 (by Stan Lee and Joe Maneely). Born to the sea princess Igraine on the isle of Avalon, Morgan grew up the watchful apprentice of Merlin and half-sister of none other than Arthur Pendragon, both of whom she stood in staunch opposition to.

While Morgan's early attempts to overthrow Camelot were all for naught, she found a renewed sense of purpose in the modern day by terrorizing the likes of Jessica Drew and the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Though she became something of a catch-all villain, Morgan never forgot her roots whether they be tied to Otherworld or the British Isles. This is especially true now that the two have collided courtesy of not just the Furies and their budding English allegiance. However, Morgan's own personal Captain Britain appears to be nothing less than another Betsy from across the multiverse.

Assuming that it is indeed another Betsy who Morgan has convinced to join her cause, it may already be too late for the world to stave off the threat that she poses. If Morgan can replace the primary Betsy Braddock with one of her own, there would be nothing stopping her from wreaking havoc on Earth. This isn't even to mention the destructive potential she would be offered when it comes to Otherworld, as well, let alone every other dimension that has ever been graced by the Captain Britain Corps' presence.

As hard as it is to imagine the kind of power and influence Morgan would wield under such circumstances, it is just as difficult to picture any future in which at least one of Betsy's fellow heroes doesn't recognize an imposter for who they truly are. Whether it be another Captain Britain or Betsy's longtime partner Rachel Summers, aka Askani, someone would be bound to realize what happened. Then again, it wouldn't take long for an evil Betsy Braddock to set in motion something far worse than herself if given the chance, and if Morgan's plan isn't stopped, that is exactly what the Marvel Universe will be dealing with sooner than later.
