After Kingdom and Train to Busan brought zombie horror to South Korea, Netflix is bringing the horror sub-genre to India in a new original series titled Betaal.

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for Betaal, from Indian production company Red Chillies and co-produced by Blumhouse Television and SK Global Entertainment. The series sees a small village living in the shadow of a cursed mountain deep within the forests of India, threatened with displacement by a planned highway.

As the authorities come to move the villagers, a tunnel through the mountain is breached to proceed with construction. However, this unleashes a wave of ravenous zombies that were imprisoned for centuries since British colonial rule.

Weaving classic tropes of the zombie sub-genre with elements of Indian folklore and mythology, the series is a terrifying twist on a familiar premise. The co-production marks Blumhouse Productions continuing to expand its television content after adapting its successful Purge franchise on TNT.
