There is no shortage of vampire anime. Even in non-vampire anime, a vampire or two may make an appearance for just an episode or two. Vampires are just fun. They live a lifestyle with complex morals, have abilities beyond humans, and often times have lived for many generations. There is a vampire for everyone, from those who want soft romances to others who prefer action and horror.

With so many differently built characters, they are often a hit or miss when it comes to fans. So, here are what we have considered the five best and worst vampires in anime, ranked.

10 Best: D From Vampire Hunter D

D is very old—about 5,000 years old, in fact. He is a Dhampir, which some very particular fans would argue makes him not a vampire. To most folklore fans though, Dhampir is basically a brand of vampire.

D's manga has run since the 80s and is still ongoing. It has a number of anime films, and fans are crossing their fingers for an animated series. D makes this list as one of the best because he is a classic. He is very cool, and those who haven't seen his films should check them out.

9 Worst: Moka Akashiya From Rosario + Vampire

Moka

The harem's main female character, Moka, is a vampire with multiple personalities. With her pink hair, she is her suppressed sweet self, and, with her white hair, she is her pure vampire self. She is pretty useless unless she is in her true form, and the anime provides little to nothing about her character other than ecchi content. The manga is better—best stick to that.

8 Best: Shinobu Oshino From Bakemonogatari

While her physical age is eight, Shinobu is actually over 500 years old. However, she does have other forms. Her name is also Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade, which might sound pretty crazy if you never watched this anime series.

Unlike Moka, she has a two-sided personality that works. She can be a badass or mellow whenever she wants, which adds more depth and logic to her character.

7 Worst: Megumi Shimizu From Shiki

Shiki is a slow-paced vampire horror anime with an interesting art style. Megumi isn't poorly written like Moka, but she is easy to hate none-the-less. She is a girl who wants to be worshiped, popular, and beautiful forever. She hates her village and everyone, save her crush, in it. So, when she becomes a vampire, she relentlessly attacks humans and tries to get her crush to become a vampire to force him to be with her.

6 Best: Dio Brando From JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Dio has become one of the most well-known anime vampires out there due to the popularity of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He is the main antagonist at the beginning and comes and goes as the series continues on.

A lot of fans like him because in typical fashion for this anime, he is very over-the-top. He is pure evil, but fans still like him because he is the sort of man who is fun to hate. He is the sort of villain you would miss years after defeating him.

5 Worst: Ferid Bathory From Seraph of the End

One of the main antagonists of Seraph of the End, Ferid is an easy character for fans to dislike. He is one of those characters who will do crazy stunts and cruel things just to possibly feel an emotion. He is a sadist who loves to manipulate and torture others for his own amusement. To make matters worse, his victims mostly consist of children.

This character is easy for this list. He is not exactly here due to poor writing, though; he is just a character that a lot of fans dislike because they are supposed to.

4 Best: Alucard From Hellsing

No anime vampire list is complete with Alucard from Hellsing. He is the protagonist of his series and is the most powerful weapon of the Hellsing Organization. Yes, they use a vampire to defeat other vampires!

He has the personality of a villain, despite being a hero. He enjoys fighting and does so with cruelty. However, he has another side to him. He envies humans and respects how they are able to get old and die. The only reason he is not number one is because he is even better in the manga than in the anime.

3 Worst: Ayato From Diabolik Lovers

The personality of this guy easily rubs people the wrong way. Firstly, he loves trickery and attention on an annoying level. He calls Yui, the main protagonist "no breasts." He always brags about himself and wants others to call him "Ayato-sama." He also assaults Yui in the first five minutes of the anime. He, along with all the other boys in this show, are pretty bad. They even go on about how they love the fear in Yui's eyes as if that is a normal thing for a man to like. He also treats her like a possession he owns. Yikes.

2 Best: Dracula From Castlevania

Our number one vampire may be debatable, as some would not consider Castlevania an anime since it wasn't originally made in Japan. Others would consider it anime anyway since it uses anime-style in its visuals. This is the same argument for Avatar: The Last Airbender.

But, let's talk about Dracula in this show. He is the main villain, and arguably one of the best-written villains we've seen in a while. Some fans can't even blame him for his actions against humanity after they burned his human wife at the stake.

1 Worst: Kaname Kuran From Vampire Knight

A lot of fans hate Kaname because he gets in the way of Zero and Yuki's relationship. It goes deeper than that though. He is in an incestuous relationship with Yuki and manipulates her actions for his self-benefit.

What makes Kaname most bad is in comparison to Zero, who is pretty selfless when it comes to Yuki's feelings.
