Sometimes, the food in video games can look so delicious it can be hard to believe that they're nothing more than a bunch of pixels. But it's not always about how the food looks. Food-themed levels have been around for generations of games, and even levels with food rendered in 32-bit have brought a sense of fun and joy.

Through video games, gamers can live out fantasies of exploring a world made entirely of food. The creativity of food-themed levels is often high, as developers are tasked with taking real-world objects and shapes and implementing them in a level that's as fun to play as it is pleasing to look at.

The second level of Pastel Pathway in Yoshi's Crafted World is sure to have gamers reaching for a glass of milk. It sees Mario's faithful companion platforming his way through a land full of confectionery.

There's a large variety of foods, from muffins to macarons to marshmallows, which are used as platforms, springs, and dominoes. Even Yoshi's pal Poochy pops out of a cupcake. It's a level full of charm, and even though the food is rendered in craft materials, it doesn't make it look any less delicious.

9 Sweet Sweet Canyon Looks Good Enough To Eat (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe)

Mario Kart 8 Sweet Sweet Canyon windmills macarons donuts

Sweet Sweet Canyon is based on Rocky Road, a level in Super Mario Galaxy, but it's much bigger, and there's quite a bit more going on. There are windmills made out of wafer, donut tunnels, a soda waterfall, and a gingerbread man audience, just to name a few.

It's a cute, well-designed track, and while it's likely that just breathing the air of Sweet Sweet Canyon will lead to tooth decay, it's hard not to get distracted from the race by all the delicious-looking food.

8 The Land Of Chocolate Makes Us Want To Go To Fudgetown (The Simpsons Game)

The Simpsons Game Land of Chocolate Homer eating chocolate rabbits

This level is based on the iconic scene from The Simpsons cartoon in which Homer fantasizes about frolicking through a land of chocolate. The level is more fleshed out than the cartoon version and has Homer chasing a white chocolate rabbit while fighting regular chocolate rabbits.

The remake of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse allows players to experience Sweets Land in 3D. When Mickey enters a milk bottle in the library, he is transported to a world full of dessert food. There, he encounters a dragon made out of red licorice that tries to halt his progress.

All kinds of candy are used in creative ways throughout the level. There are gummy dolphins, large jello cubes that Mickey can move through, and a melted ice cream waterfall with falling macarons.

6 Candy Chateau Is A Level Worth Savoring (Rayman)

Rayman Candy Chateau riding a frying pan

The original Rayman on the PlayStation was one of the first great platformers of its generation. Candy Chateau is interesting because it's the last level in the game. Typically food-themed levels are somewhere in the middle of a game, perhaps because there's an air of frivolity about them, but this level bucked that trend before there was one.

The level sees Rayman platforming his way across a frosted landscape beneath a foreboding purple sky. It starts out with him sliding on a frying pan, then follows more traditional platforming through the nougat- and chocolate-laden level.

5 Juicy Jungle Is A Succulent Sojourn (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)

Donkey Kong has a strong association with food, given his penchant for hoarding bananas in his own personal banana cave. The fifth world of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze has Donkey and the gang venturing through a lush, fruit-filled jungle.

With food-themed levels often being filled with sweets and dessert foods, it's nice that there's a level based on fruit. Although, the factory pumping out juice and popsicles makes it slightly less healthy. The level design, as with the rest of the game, is top-notch.

4 Sweets Park Is Full Of Delectable Delights (Kirby's Epic Yarn)

Kirby's Epic Yarn Sweets Park Kirby in a donut hole

Sweets Park is the fourth level of Treat Land, and it has Kirby navigating his way through squishy pudding and platforming across revolving donuts, as well as tons of frosting. The treasures are also food-related, with a Donut Pillow and Dessert Dresser to be found.

Everything about this level, from the art direction to the music, makes for a pleasant jaunt through a land of sweet treats. While no one wants to eat anything made from yarn in real life, the food in this level looks good enough to eat.

3 Sugarland Shimmy Is A Salivating Scuffle (Cuphead)

Cuphead Baroness Von Bon Bon Mugman on floating candy

Sugarland Shimmy sees Cuphead go up against Baroness Von Bon Bon. Three out of five food-themed mini-bosses feature in the battle, one of them being a floating jawbreaker that tries to eat Cuphead. There's also a giant piece of candy corn, a waffle, a gumball machine, and a cupcake.

The mini-bosses appear in random order each time, with the cupcake, Muffsky Chernikov, not appearing in Simple Mode. Once Cuphead has gotten past the three phases, Baroness Von Bon Bon finally takes matters into her own hands. The background is a beautifully depicted landscape of sweets that's sure to have gamers salivating while fighting.

2 Luncheon Kingdom Is A Quirky Cook's Paradise (Super Mario Odyssey)

Super Mario Odyssey Luncheon Kingdom fruits and vegetables, cooking pot on volcano

Inspired by Mount Vesuvius, Luncheon Kingdom is perhaps the most unique-looking level in Super Mario Odyssey. The neon color palette gives the level a vibrancy that distinguishes it from every other level. It's also one of the quirkiest levels in the game.

There are giant pieces of food lying around, a pot cooking on a volcano, and a giant slab of meat resting on a perch high above the kingdom. There's also a cooking carnival, and the inhabitants of the kingdom are pieces of cutlery.

1 Sweet Mountain Zone Is A Planet-Sized Buffet (Sonic Colors Ultimate)

Sonic Colors Ultimate Sweet Mountain lollipops, cookies, ice cream, gingerbread men

Sweet Mountain Zone consists of 6 Acts and a boss. Each level contains, as the name implies, mountains of food. Giant ice creams, burgers stacked to the sky, candy cane grind rails, and more are all built on a foundation of cake. It's the handiwork of Dr. Eggman, who presumably wasn't content with a few cafés for his interstellar amusement park.

Instead, he went for an entire planet of confectionery. Using the Drill ability, Sonic can plow his way through layers of banana- and jelly-bean-filled cake. Quite possibly the largest food-themed area in any video game, at least theoretically.
