While fighting games are a great choice for gamers to see different franchises cross paths in battle, there are other genres, like RPGs, that approach the crossover differently. Instead of asking, "Who is better?", these games decide to ask, "What if?" This leads to engaging stories that weave numerous characters, plots, and settings together. In these video game crossovers, fans get to see how characters from one franchise interact with characters from another.

The fighting franchise moved into the multiversal crossover realm with Soul Calibur II which had console-specific characters. PlayStation 2 owners got Heihachi Mishima from Tekken, Xbox owners got Spawn, and Gamecube owners got Link from The Legend of Zelda.

Soul Caliber sequels featured more crossover characters like Darth Vader from Star Wars, Ezio from Assassin's Creed II, and most recently, Geralt from The Witcher 3. Soul Calibur has been a solid fighting game for years, and while the roster could use a few more guest characters, the ones who show up are exciting and fun to play, offering a dream-come-true for some fans.

When Telltale Games decided to make a casual poker game, they centered the game on the characters, not just the cards. Poker Night at the Inventory featured the player joining an underground poker game with special guests such as Sam and Max's Max, Strongbad from Homestar Runner fame, Penny Arcade's Tycho, and Team Fortress 2's The Heavy.

8 Monster Hunter World Meets The Monster Hunter Witcher

The entire premise of Monster Hunter and its many iterations is centered on the player exploring and hunting specific monsters. These monsters range in size, species, and difficulty. Geralt of Rivia, the main character from The Witcher series of games, is literally a monster hunter.

It only made sense for Capcom to team up with CD Projekt Red to have the silver-haired sword-wielder step into the realm of Monster Hunter World and hunt down an elusive creature. Players got a few story missions with Geralt and then unlocked his armor and face as wearable items.

7 Marvel Vs Capcom Is A Hypothetical Testing Ground

In the minds of fans, hypothetical battles take place all the time. Capcom decided to take some of those hypotheticals and put them to the test. The Marvel Vs. Capcom series of games offered comic and gaming fans a way to see who would win in epic fights between characters from each franchise.

The Marvel Vs. Capcom games were released on arcade cabinets and on numerous consoles throughout the years. They are solid fighting games, though fans tend to lean towards the older games as being better. They feature a wealth of characters from both the Marvel and Capcom franchises duking it out with fast, smooth gameplay and stunning visuals.

6 Project X Zone Was A Dream Project Come True

Bandai Namco created the tactical RPG Project X Zone as a literal dream project that would bring together characters from across the Namco games as well as Capcom and Sega franchises. While some players may get lost in the fantastical story at the center of Project X Zone, the real draw is the stunning amount of characters that cameo, keeping players guessing who will pop out next.

The first Project X Zone game featured over 90 characters and the sequel topped that with even more. Some of the franchises featured include Ace Attorney, Tekken, Resident Evil, Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem, and Soul Calibur among many, many more.

5 Mario & Sonic At The Olympics Gives A Gold Medal Performance

Two of gaming's largest icons go head-to-head in an array of sports from official Olympic Games, both summer and winter. Mario and Sonic each have a large supporting cast that gives each game a large variety of characters for players to choose from.

While the Mario sports games are well received, adding the Sonic team to the official settings of Mario & Sonic At The Olympics made for a fun and somewhat educational experience, as the games often provided informational tidbits about the city the games are hosted in. The sports mini-games were fun and each game featured a range of them that kept players' interest.

4 Heroes Of The Storm Combines Top Blizzard Franchises

When Blizzard decided to enter the MOBA field, they had great potential with Heroes of the Storm. Fans of Blizzard games like Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft, and Overwatch were already invested in those properties, so anything new would capture their attention.

Heroes of the Storm created a user-friendly experience that combined characters from Blizzard's franchises into a fun top-down game. Blizzard continues to update and add characters so that fans have more to get excited about and return to play.

3 Adventure Through Disney & Square Enix In Kingdom Hearts

When Square Enix and Disney teamed up for the first Kingdom Hearts game, two massive fan bases exploded with excitement. Kingdom Hearts follows Sora as he adventures through numerous Disney and Pixar properties as well as Square Enix properties, like Final Fantasy, teaming up with characters from each game, movie, or show on his quest to stop the Heartless.

There have been several sequels to Kingdom Hearts, with Kingdom Hearts 4 in the works, that continued to expand into more and more Disney properties. The game offered an interesting, emotional story and fun RPG gameplay and combined it with fan-favorite characters, so players keep coming back to the franchise.

2 Super Smash Bros. Is The Ultimate Melee

Nintendo already has a massive following of fans that will buy almost any mainline Nintendo property game, and there are a lot of them. When Super Smash Bros. entered the scene as a brawler fighting game featuring multiple characters from multiple Nintendo franchises, fans were more than ecstatic.

The fighting gameplay in Super Smash Bros. was fun, challenging, and great for parties. As the sequels came out, more characters were added to the roster from Nintendo and third-party games. Fortnite is an absolute juggernaut when it comes to crossovers. What started out as a tower defense, base building co-op game has become one of the largest gaming properties in the world. Because of its success, entertainment franchises from all over are eager to get their product in the game.

Characters from other games like Halo and God of War have appeared along with characters from movies like Star Wars, Batman, and Marvel movies. There have even been in-game concerts with Travis Scott and Marshmellow. Fortnite doesn't keep its crossovers limited to games or skins — they have full-on events, even hosting a special broadcast for the launch of the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.
