Morbius is coming to the big screen this year, a Spider-Man antihero that most movie fans don't know, but one that could present a fantastic story if done right. Jared Leto takes on the role of the scientist who becomes a living vampire and has to find a way to survive in a world that fears him.

Morbius is very different from other depictions of vampires in fiction, and that includes a large number of vampire-type characters in comic books as well. The idea of a vampire in comic books goes back many years. Even superheroes like Batman and Iron Man have had to battle the bloodsuckers over the years. Here is a look at 10 of the best vampires in comics.

10 MORBIUS

Michael Morbius was, at one time, a Noble Prize-winning biochemist who suffered from a debilitating blood disease. However, he sought out a cure and used vampire bats to do so. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as he hoped and turned him into a living vampire that had to consume blood to survive.

Morbius was a Spider-Man villain to start, and along with Lizard, who had a similar origin story, were almost impossible for Spidey to beat. While not an actual vampire, over time, Morbius became an anti-hero who didn't want to hurt people and fought to maintain control over his hunger.

9 DRACULA

Dracula is the legendary vampire from Bram Stoker's novels, and he exists in both DC and Marvel Comics. The DC version has changed little from the Earth-One days to the present day, and his most notable appearances came in the Elseworld Batman comic Red Rain.

However, the Marvel version is much more prominent. This version first appeared in 1951 in the pages of Suspense #7, and this is the legendary Vlad Dracula that everyone knows. He has battled Blade and has been a thorn in the side of Doctor Doom, as their countries are neighbors.

8 SKINNER SWEET

The 10 Most Important Characters Vertigo Introduced to The DC Comics Universe

Before Scott Snyder joined DC Comics and took over the reins of Batman, he and Rafael Albuquerque created arguably the greatest vampire comic book in existence — American Vampire. The main character in these books is the bloodthirsty Skinner Sweet, a vampire who could walk in the sun.

The comics saw American history influenced by vampires in hiding, both in politics and in Hollywood. Skinner Sweet was a thorn in their side, and he always seemed to pop up and ruin anything they were trying to accomplish.

7 CASSIDY

Preacher: 10 Comic Storylines We Hope To See In the Final Season

If you want to find the most entertaining vampire in comic books, look no further than the hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy in Preacher. Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Cassidy is the vampire that sets out to help his best friend Jesse Custer in his battle with The Grail.

Cassidy remains possibly the best-written character in the Preacher comics. He is a hard-drinking vampire that no one can trust, but one that wants to do right by Jesse, even if he does betray him one too many times. It is also interesting that Cassidy, and not Jesse, is the hero of the story by the end.

6 VAMPIRELLA

Vampirella was initially introduced in her own horror comics magazine in 1969 by Forrest J Ackerman and Trina Robbins. This was part of Warren Publishing, rather than one of the big two in DC and Marvel. The character moved on to Harris Publications and finally Dynamite.

Unlike most vampires in comics, Vampirella was instead an alien that lived on a planet where the inhabitants are vampires that live on blood, but blood flows through the rivers. She is the daughter of Lilith and is a "good" vampire who protects Earth from evil ones.

5 VICENTE

IDW Publishing created the vampire comic book series 30 Days of Night starting in 2002. This comic book took an interesting approach to the ideas of vampires. It took place in Alaska, where the sun does not rise for 30 days, and that leaves the vampires free rein with nothing to stop them.

There are a lot of vampires, known as The Nosferatu, with Vicente leading them. However, it was Marlowe who led the attacks in Russia, causing anger in The Nosferatu since it threatened their secrecy. Fans of the movie think Marlowe is the main antagonist, but in the comics, it is Vicente, who kills Marlowe.

4 BLADE

Arguably, the most famous vampire in Marvel Comics is the Day Walker, Blade. With three movies and appearances in several different comics, including a period where he was a member of The Avengers, Blade is the top of the line for vampires in comic books.

Of course, Blade is a Day Walker and is only a partial vampire due to being born to a mother bitten by a vampire before she died. Blade then made it his life's cause to seek out and kill every vampire in existence.

3 D

Vampire Hunter D has a long life in several different formats. There were 26 novels written about this story, as well as the popular anime series that skyrocketed the property to great success. In 2007, Saiko Takaki started his manga adaptation, which lasted for eight volumes.

The main character is D, a dhampir, which is a half-breed vampire, with a human mother and a vampire father.  Not belonging to either race, he has no real home but was very powerful, with the powers of the Nobility but not all of their weaknesses.

2 MARCO ESPERANZA

Probably the least known vampire on this list, Marco Esperanza is from the Sea of Red comic book series by Kieron Dwyer, Rick Remender, and Salgood Sam. Released from Image Comics starting in 2005, Sea of Red focused on a man who was the only survivor of a sunken ship in 1533.

However, Marco Esperanza was saved by the Black Galleon, a ship operated by vampires. By 2004, Esperanza is freed from a sunken vessel he spent the last 400 years trapped on and sets out for revenge, with a film crew helping him track down the sea captain who imprisoned him.

1 BATMAN

You can't talk about vampires in comic books without talking about the most famous superhero in the world to become a vampire — Batman. This happened in the Elseworlds story Batman and Dracula: Red Rain in 1992.

The story saw Batman investigating murders and realizing it was Dracula and his "children." Batman ended up bitten by a vampire and defeats Dracula before he finally succumbs to full vampirism. There were then two follow-up stories in Batman: Bloodstorm and Batman: Crimson Mist.
