Everyone loved Thor Odinson, but he wasn't the one and only God of Thunder. After Odinson became unworthy during Original Sin, Jane Foster claimed Mjolnir and shook things up in the Marvel universe. Originally, Thor's love interest started as a nurse and then became a doctor. In 2014, Jane was chosen to be the next Goddess of Thunder.

In 2015, Jane Foster starred in The Mighty Thor by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. Unarguably, she has come a long way since she debuted in 1962. Jane Foster let go of the Thor mantle in 2018, but given Natalie Portman's role in Thor: Love and Thunder, her name was back in everyone's mouth — making it the perfect time to remember why Jane deserved Mjolnir as much as Odinson did.

8 She Has Been Around Since The '70s

Jane Foster first accepted the Thor mantle in What If? #10 in 1978. This issue ponders what would have happened if Jane had found Mjolnir instead of Donald Blake. The woman, a nurse working for Blake at the moment, embraces her duty as Thordis — not Thor — until Blake remembers his true identity.

Since theMarvel fandom has been very critical of gender-bent superheroes lately, the fact Jane first became the Goddess of Thunder many decades ago adds credibility to her story. Jane's absolute transformation into one of the most powerful goddesses in Marvel had always been a matter of time.

7 She's The One & Only Female Thor

Jane Foster becomes the new Thor

Since Thor first debuted in the comics in 1962, he has shared Mjolnir with many Marvel characters, such as Beta Ray Bill, Thunderstrike, and even Odin. Additionally, many others have been able to lift the hammer — including men like the Hulk, Magneto, and Doctor Doom as well as women like Rogue, Black Widow, and Squirrel Girl. However, Jane is the first female character to take the Thor mantle, embracing everything it implies.

Jane Foster's Mighty Thor is one of many superheroes created in recent decades who provide proper female representation in Marvel. She has been depicted as a fierce, smart, and brave woman before becoming Thor, but her time as the Goddess of Thunder truly inspires women and girls who read comics.

6 She's More Down-To-Earth Than Odinson

Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor in the comics

Time and time again, Thor Odinson has gotten in trouble due to his personality. Even though he has learned humility after becoming Midgard's favorite hero, he's still arrogant, impulsive, and overconfident at times. While Jane can get cocky, she's far more modest than Odinson — probably because she wasn't raised as a deity.

There's nothing wrong with Thor's attitude. In fact, many fans love him precisely because of his confidence. However, the god's attitude sometimes gets him and his teammates in trouble. For example, several Gods get crucified after Thor defies Gorr in Thor: God of Thunder #8. This doesn't happen to Jane. She's less impulsive and often thinks before acting.

5 She Can Harness Electricity Without Using Mjolnir

Jane Foster wields Mjolnir as Thor in Marvel Comics

Obviously, as Mjolnir's primary wielder, the Mighty Thor possesses a set of god-like skills, such as super strength, super reflexes, and super speed. She can command Mjolnir to create lightning and fly. Additionally, when Jane transforms into the Goddess of Thunder, she's able to harness electricity to create lightning bolts without having Mjolnir in her hands. This can be seen in Thor #3.

Given that the Mighty Thor reverts into Jane whenever she loses connection to Mjolnir, many believe she only has Thor-like abilities due to the hammer. However, her electrokinesis proves the power of Thor isn't just located inside this weapon.

4 She Has A Very Strong Connection To Mjolnir

Since Mjolnir itself chose Jane to wield it as the new Thor, the woman has a very deep connection to this weapon. For instance, as soon as they bonded, she realized Mjolnir was a sentient weapon. This allows he to manipulate it easily. Jane has better control of Mjolnir than other Thors do. For example, she can change its direction and speed in the middle of its trajectory.

This connection to her own weapon makes Jane very dangerous in battle. In the trailer of Thor: Love and Thunder, she turns Mjolnir into pieces that reconstruct after hitting the bad guys. Hopefully, the MCU will explore Jane's relationship with Mjolnir on a deeper level.

3 She's Human, So She Can Be Relatable

Thor and Jane Foster Secret Revealed

Contrary to Odinson, Jane wasn't born with powers. Before becoming the Mighty Thor, Jane was a nurse-then-doctor working in Broxton, Oklahoma, who served as Thor's love interest. Given this, she has a human side that Odinson doesn't have. This makes Jane's role as a hero even more important. On one hand, this means she's able to speak for Midgard when it comes to diplomatic matters with the whole universe and the Congress of Worlds.

Additionally, Jane makes Thor a more relatable character. Instead of being a god, she's a human with social responsibilities and abilities beyond compare — as well as a secret identity, like Spider-Man or Daredevil. This backstory leads fans to sympathize with a her character because they feel closer to her.

2 She Chose Her Duty Over Herself

After Odinson stopped being worthy, Mjolnir stayed on the moon, from where it called Jane. The woman, who had been fighting against breast cancer, accepted her duty as the new Goddess of Thunder without considering her own health. Even when it became obvious that Mjolnir was purging the chemotherapy out of her body, Jane didn't stop.

The fact Jane chooses to wield Mjolnir even if this eventually kills her speaks volumes about her worthiness. As Thor, Jane embraces the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep Earth hopeful because she believes "There must always be a Thor."

1 She Embraced Death (& It Paid Off)

Thor 705 Jane-Foster's Death

After months of transforming into Thor, Jane's cancer reached stage four. However, instead of giving up her role, Jane decided she had to save Asgardia from Mangog. Following a brutal battle, Jane sacrificed Mjolnir and threw it into the sun alongside the villain. Without its magic to help her, she died in Odinson's arms. Fortunately, he was able to resurrect her with magic, which gave Jane a second chance to cure her illness.

Although Jane's death was soon reverted by Odinson and Odin, it's still a heartbreaking moment in Marvel history. It's the result of a decision Jane made when Mjolnir called for her for the first time. Additionally, it showed why Mjolnir chose her. She truly was a selfless hero. Jane's sacrifice was one of the most compelling parts of her arc as Thor.
