San Diego Comic-Con 2019 has come to a close, and, as the wait for next year’s event begins, there’s nothing better to keep the mind going and keep it off of the long wait than to look back at the recent event and see some of the best cosplayers of the entire weekend.
Cosplayers from all around the world came to showcase their love for their favorite films, shows, games, books, and comic books as well as their support of the creators and actors who bring these properties to life. Let’s take a look at the ten best comic book based cosplays.
It’s no secret that of all the comic book companies, Marvel has a leading-edge thanks to the success of the MCU and, to a lesser extent, the FOX/X-Men film franchises. One of the biggest reasons for the X-Men boost in popularity has to be Ryan Reynold’s turn as the hilarious mercenary Deadpool.
This first cosplayer showcased the love and passion they have for the film by going into extreme detail with their replication of the iconic costume. The precision details that went into this cosplay showcase a deep knowledge of the character and film, making for the ultimate cosplay.
9 Captain Marvel
One of the breakout stars of the past year in the MCU has to be Captain Marvel. Brought to life by the incredible Brie Larson, Captain Marvel is a fighter pilot who gained nearly god-like power in an accident which allowed a nearby alien Kree scientist’s DNA—and, in the film, the Cosmic Cube—to fuse with her own DNA, giving her powerful abilities.
She became crucial to the fight against Thanos, and this cosplayer brought the same level of intensity and power to the role as Brie Larson’s version certainly did.
8 Miles Morales
One of the breakout characters of the year definitely has to be Miles Morales, who in the comics was the Ultimate Spider-Man from the Ultimate Universe, but who has since become a Spider-Man of the 616 universe and was the breakout star of the hit film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Known as a cultural icon, Miles has the same powers as Peter Parker and gained them from a genetically enhanced spider created by Norman Osborn and stolen by his uncle Aaron, aka The Prowler. This cosplayer brought the iconic hero to life perfectly at the event.
One of the best characters to come out of the Netflix/Marvel cast of characters and a fan favorite in the comics has to be Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock. After losing his sight in a chemical truck accident as a child, he gained enhanced abilities that allowed him to see via sound, taste, and touch. After his losing his father to local mobsters, Matt trained to become a lawyer by day and a vigilante hero by night. This cosplayer captured the essence of the character both from the show and the comics, as Matt’s history is him never giving up.
Another huge fan-favorite character from the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe has to be the dangerous and unpredictable villain/anti-hero Mystique. Whether she’s working for Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants or helping the mutant race survive against an extinction-level threat, Mystique’s shapeshifting abilities make her one of the most powerful mutants around.
Her popularity certainly soared after her appearances in the FOX/X-Men universe, most recently portrayed by the popular and amazing actress Jennifer Lawrence. This cosplayer took inspiration from Lawrence’s first appearance in X-Men: Days of Future’s Past, in great detail.
5 The Joker
One of the most dangerous, maniacal, and feared villains of the DC Universe has to be none other than The Joker. A man whose past is as mysterious as his true identity, the Joker is Batman’s arch-nemesis. A villain who believes everyone is just one bad day away from becoming like him, he views the world through a chaotic lens and seeks anarchy and violence at every turn.
This version of the DC Comic’s villain was inspired by the recent iteration in Suicide Squad’s Jared Leto, giving off that gang leader/maniac look the actor had in the film.
4 Harley Quinn
The other half of The Joker’s story is his on-and-off love interest, Harley Quinn. Formerly known as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Harley was the Joker’s psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who fell under his spell and broke him out of prison to become his henchman, falling in love with him.
After years of suffering under his rule, she finally broke free. Still a loose cannon, she instead fights as an anti-hero much like Deadpool in the Marvel Universe and is now involved with the former villain Poison Ivy. This cosplayer captured the character’s Suicide Squad look from the film.
3 Wonder Woman, Supergirl & Superman
Three of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe have to be Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Superman. Wonder Woman, aka Princess Diana of Themyscira, is an Amazon Warrior and hero, as well as an incredibly powerful demigod.
Meanwhile, Superman and Supergirl are two of the last survivors of the planet Krypton, with Superman arriving first and growing up on Earth as a child while Supergirl arrived later, discovering her younger cousin was now her older cousin. The three heroes have always been tied closely together, and these cosplayers brought the tight-knit bond together to perfection.
2 Captain America, Iron Man & Thor
The second best cosplay from the recent convention in San Diego has to be this next image of Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor. The original trio of heroes who helped form the backbone of the Avengers, Iron Man’s Tony Stark was the master genius and humorous yet flawed hero of the group.
Cap was the hero out of his own time, awoken in the modern day to fight yet again, while Thor was the immortal Norse god who lost his family to Thanos and sought redemption. The powerful trio in Avengers: Endgame is perfectly captured here by these cosplayers.
While it was tricky to pick this next one over the Avengers from the last entry, this next entry was chosen as the best simply because of the incredible detail that went into it. This cosplayer brought the Teen Titan hero known as Raven to life perfectly.
The half-human/half demonic daughter of the interdimensional demon Trigon fought her father’s dark legacy and became a hero, using dark magic to fight her father and his forces as well as other threats. The cosplayer brought the hero’s iconic black suit with cape and dark magic rings to life perfectly.
