The significance of Sony’s PlayStation 2 cannot be underestimated. The original PlayStation was a popular debut console, but the steps forward taken with the PS2 were on a whole other level and many still consider it to have one of the best gaming libraries out of any console.

The PlayStation 2 is over two decades old and a lot has changed in the industry during that time, which has naturally led to remakes of certain titles. Many PS2 games are put on pedestals, but there’s a large selection of titles that would benefit from a full-blown modern remake.

10 Final Fantasy X Is Worthy Of The Final Fantasy VII Remake Treatment

final-fantasy-x-combat

The Final Fantasy series really comes into its own during the era of the PlayStation and the PlayStation 2. Final Fantasy X is such a breakthrough entry in the series because it’s the first entry for the PS2 and with it comes a dramatically larger scope and experience. Tidus and Yuna’s quest to protect the world of Spira from Sin is very much a product of its time and a remake would do wonders here. There’s less reverence with FFX than there is for Final Fantasy VII, which would likely make audiences more accepting of a big, bold remake.

9 Silent Hill 2 Marks The Peak Of Psychological And Emotional Survival Horror

James from Silent Hill 2 sitting on a chair looking sad

The PlayStation 2’s Silent Hill 2 reflects such a radical jump forward in quality from its successor on the original PlayStation, but it’s also viewed as one of the crowning achievements of the survival horror genre. Silent Hill 2 plays with psychologically complex and emotionally exhausting ideas with a deeply layered and dark narrative. Silent Hill 2 is still a classic, but it’d be amazing to see it brought to life with current hardware like what’s happened with Resident Evil 2 and 3. Silent Hill 2 could become an even more disturbing experience.

8 Okami Is A Masterful Artistic Expression With Room To Grow

Games Okami HD Scenic Overlook Screenshot

Okami is a beautiful, delicate creation that feels like a painting come to life due to its distinct art style and the nature of its gameplay. Okami gained a lot of attention on the Wii due to the use of motion controls to replicate the game’s paintbrush stroke movements, but it originated as a PlayStation 2 title.

Modern games don’t feel like they have the patience of Okami. There was a satisfying HD remaster from over a decade ago, a sequel for the Nintendo DS in 2011, but Okami would benefit the most from a total remake that takes advantage of an open world structure.

7 Ico Is An Ahead Of Its Time Adventure That Audiences Are Finally Ready For

ICO PS2 Game

Ico is a true PlayStation 2 classic and a testament to what can be done in video games. The title is a hybrid between the action, adventure, and puzzle genres, but it makes its mark through a staggering visual style that felt incredibly unique for the time. Ico is exactly the sort of game that can be played again and appreciated for its ingenuity, but that doesn't mean that an ambitious remake wouldn't also have its value. Video games have just come so far in the two decades since Ico's release.

6 Fatal Frame Is A Perfectly Creepy Concept Where Fans Want More

PS2 Fatal Frame Spirit Camera Ghost Attack

Fatal Frame continues to quietly turn out new entries and it's found a strange, niche life on Nintendo's Switch of all places. It's very possible that new mainline Fatal Frame games will continue to be made, but an equally exciting approach to the series would be to remake the first game in the series and celebrate the origins of Fatal Frame. The original game for the PlayStation 2 examines a young girl's journey to find her brother, who has gone missing in a haunted mansion. The first Fatal Frame is still scary, but it could be improved with modern touches.

5 There’s Too Much Life And Joy In Viewtiful Joe For It To Go Forgotten

PS2 viewtiful-joe

There was such excitement around the Viewtiful Joe sidescrolling beat-’em-up series that it seemed like a guarantee that the energetic action hero would go on to be a staple. Despite the overflowing personality and charm that’s present in Viewtiful Joe, it’s a series that’s been dormant for years.

Viewtiful Joe’s gameplay and cel shaded art design were beautiful for the time, but they could stand out even more now with a remake. Self-aware superhero culture is at an all-time high and so much could be done with the Viewtiful Joe property. A remake of the PS2 version could even keep Dante from Devil May Cry intact.

4 Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X Is The Definitive Old School Resi

Remakes can sometimes be met with a lot of resistance, but Capcom’s Resident Evil series has had such success with new versions of its classic games that it’s become a tradition for them. Remakes of the first three Resident Evil games exist, with news that a Resident Evil 4 remake is on the way. Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X, the PlayStation 2 enhanced version of the Dreamcast classic, tells one of the best stories in the series. CODE: Veronica far older than Resident Evil 4 and more in need of a modern remake. It hopefully won’t get lost in the shuffle.

3 Mr. Mosquito Is Ready To Make A Buzz Again

PS2 Mr Mosquito Sucking Blood

Mr. Mosquito is an early PlayStation 2 that flew under the radar, but could have emerged as a surprise winner like Katamari Damacy. Mr. Mosquito is certainly a unique endeavor. The player controls a mosquito who needs to suck blood from an unsuspecting family through a series of missions. Mr. Mosquito has endless charm and quirkiness, but its controls are far from perfect and it’s why the game quietly disappeared. A clever-but-flawed game like Mr. Mosquito is perfect for a modern remake that can properly take advantage of this generation’s hardware, or even become a VR experience.

2 Jak And Daxter Can Kickstart A New Legacy

Jak and Daxter celebrating in Jak & Daxter The Precursor Legacy

There was a time in the video game industry where an odd platforming mascot was necessary for survival. Naughty Dog’s Jak and Daxter series were iconic PlayStation 2 titles. A lot has been done with this lovable human and otter-weasel hybrid duo, and a remastered Jak and Daxter trilogy collection at least brought the games over to modern audiences. However, a full-on remake of the original from the ground up could push the series in an exciting new direction and tap into different ideas.

1 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty Could Further Embrace Kojima’s Imagination

raiden realizes he is in over his head

The Metal Gear franchise was one of the PlayStation’s most successful franchises and properly allowed Hideo Kojima to rise into an auteur developer. Metal Gear Solid 2 brilliantly plays with the audience’s expectations of a sequel, and has become a controversial entry in the series as a result. The original Metal Gear Solid released a thorough remake, The Twin Snakes, for the GameCube and even the 3DS upgraded Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in certain ways. Sons of Liberty deserves The Twin Snakes treatment, but it could also play with the concept of a remake.
