Over the years, the X-Men’s ranks have been filled with enormous powerhouses who could wipe out entire countries by themselves, let alone as part of a team. Professor Xavier is usually at the helm, though other mutants have stepped in when the telepath is dead, indisposed, or just feels like having a break.

Though the X-men’s roster is ever-changing, one thing that always remains the same is the idea of mutant preservation. Mutant preservation sure is easier when someone can topple a building with their mind or snap a person in two like a twig. But what teams stand out above the rest?

10 The New X-Men (2001)

The New X-Men

Though packed full of power and unrivaled potential, this team collapses due to conflicting personalities and a telepathic affair that technically never actually happened. Jean Grey and Emma Frost could be two of the most potent telepaths on the planet, and yet, they chose to fight over a man whose only accessories are red-tinted sunglasses

The team falls apart once the affair is made public, even resulting in Frost's murder at the hands of her student and clone Esme. Though the group was brimming with energy, their lack of cohesion held them back. This was inevitably their doom

9 X-Men First Class

The first team of X-Men had it all, from hand-to-hand combatants to a telepathic warrior and a quick-witted teen with an icy alter ego. With Professor X at the helm, other members tackling the threat of Magneto included Beast, Angel, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Ice-Man.

Though the ranks have changed and adapted throughout the years, the original five have always remained integral to the team's spirit and power. After all, if it were not for their success, the rest would not exist. If these five returned at their full potential, there would be few teams able to beat them head-on.

8 New Mutants

New Mutants Magick with glowing eyes

The New Mutants have hosted a mass of runaways and rejects over the years, all of them dealing with their own inner demons, and some dealing with genuine ones as well. Members have included Wolfsbane, Karma, Cannonball, Sunspot, Magick, and Psyche.

Though they might not possess muscle like other teams, the New Mutant's abilities were still quite potent. By issue #99, they had it all, with Warpath bringing some much-needed physical combat expertise to the fold. This band of heroes has recently had their own live-action film, with many of the original characters making the final cut.

7 Dark X-Men

Norman Osborn already had a full schedule with his own iteration of the Avengers, but he still enlisted Emma Frost to create their own Mutant team. It consisted of Frost, Cloak & Dagger, Dark Beast, Mimic, Mystique as Professor X, Namor, Omega, and Daken posing as Wolverine.

Though many of its members were posing as other mutants entirely, the Dark X-Men were packed full of heavy hitters. Frost alone could take out most people, which was proven when both she and Namor revealed themselves as double agents for Cyclops.

6 Outback

X men team classic

After the torment of events like the Mutant Massacre, the X-Men sought refuge in the Australian outback. Though holidays were never really the X-Men's thing, the outback era would definitely get three stars on google. The roster contained Wolverine, Storm, Havok, Colossus, Rogue, Psylocke, Longshot, and Dazzler.

As well as exploring characters that were considered B-list compared to other mutants, the Outback era packed a severe punch in terms of power level. With heavy-hitters like Rogue, Wolverine, and Colossus, there was certainly muscle to spare. This incarnation really had every role filled perfectly, right down to Dazzler's on hand performance should the need arise.

5 Magneto's Uncanny X-Men

Following the events of AvX, the AXIS storyline saw many typical narratives become flipped, with heroes now becoming villains and vice versa. Magneto put together a rag-tag group of mutants that alone had enormous potential, so together, they were anything but weak.

The team, led by Magneto, was made up of Archangel, Fantomex, M, Mystique, Psylocke, and Sabertooth. M alone has enough powers to take up a whole team, so when combined with the likes of Fantomex and Mystique, Magneto could not have asked for a better black ops team.

4 Krakoan X-Factor

X Factor 2020

There have been many iterations of X-Factor over the years, but the most recent incarnation is by far the most alluring. Its members include Daken, Eye-Boy, Northstar, Aurora, Prestige, Polaris, and Prodigy.

Though reasonably new as a team, all of its members are seasoned mutants in terms of combat and tactics. They are yet to prove their competency, but few other teams possess so many A-list heroes. Polaris rivals Magneto in terms of raw power, so when combined with Prestige and Daken, X-Factor can deal with any threat. Pity the fool who gets trapped between Daken and Polaris, because either side is a pretty nasty way to go.

3 Uncanny Avengers

The Avengers Unity Squad assembled in Marvel Comics

The Mutant reputation needed some severe PR tactics, therefore, Captain America, in all his wisdom, decided to form a combination team. With himself as a leader, he joined Havok, Rogue, Thor, Wolverine, and Scarlet Witch.

It is essential to mention that Scarlet Witch alone could wipe the floor with most teams. However, much of the story was Wanda getting to grips with her decisions and powers. Even if Scarlet Witch could not just destroy everyone, the combined might of this team was unparalleled. With Rogue, Thor, and Wanda fighting on the same side, it should come as no surprise that they beat every villain they came across.

2 Extinction Team

X-Men Extinction Team

Before the events of Avengers Vs. X-Men, Cyclops saw fit to put together a team to deal with any threat Utopia may come across. This lineup included Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Namor, Storm, Danger, Magick, and Hope.

The power levels on this team are scary, no wonder Captain America saw them as such a threat to humanity. Their unified minds were unbreakable in the face of adversity, so much so that they resembled a militia more than a superhero team. It was only the Phoenix force that drove them apart, though arguably it made them the most powerful X-team in existence.

1 IVX

Inhumans Vs X-men as both sides stare each other down ready to fight.

There may have been massive battles in the Inhumans Vs. X-Men crossover, but the biggest was the frequent battle of morals and values. Beast was very much against all-out war, but Emma Frost, Storm, and unsurprisingly Magneto drove the conversation towards the much-anticipated conflict.

They needed a unified force to combat the Inhumans, and that is exactly what they were. Under Frost's problematic leadership, the X-Men took out each Inhuman in swift and unrelenting fury. Frost knocked down the time it took to change into her Diamond form, and with the help of Dazzler, took out Black Bolt. The roster is huge, but a huge threat like the Terrigen cloud needs a huge force to combat it. Some members include Dazzler, Beast, Old man Logan, Forge, Storm, Jean Grey, Stepford Cuckoos, and Magneto.
