10 DAREDEVIL BY BENDIS AND MALEEV
While the Daredevil ongoing series has seen some amazing creators over the years, Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev took the character to new heights and shattering new lows. The duo took over the series during its Marvel Knights run following Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada, though the stories couldn't feel further apart.
From the fall of the Kingpin to the reveal of Matt Murdock's greatest secret, the Ultimate Collection of Bendis and Maleev's Daredevil is a must-read for any fan of DD and pulpy noir storytelling mixed with amazingly gritty and emotional art.
9 SECRET WARS
Jonathan Hickman destroyed the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe and every other universe in the Marvel Multiverse with a series of incursions that began during his time with the Avengers line of titles. However, he set about rebuilding it into the Marvel Multiverse we know today with the epic event known as Secret Wars.
This collection pairs Hickman with the amazing art of Esad Ribić to explore the patchwork nature of Battleworld, who created the new world, and the surviving heroes plan to restore their reality. Secret Wars set the course for the current Marvel lineup and is a fantastic read for any fan of Hickman.
8 HAWKEYE: MY LIFE AS A WEAPON
Clint Barton spent most of his time as Hawkeye as a team player, whether it was as a member of the Avengers, leader of the West Coast and Secret Avengers, or even as the leader of the Thunderbolts for a time. However, we rarely get to see Clint fly solo or lead a civilian life, which Matt Fraction and David Aja brought fans with their Hawkeye ongoing.
Clint is joined by fellow Hawkeye Kate Bishop as the two work out their mentor-student relationship and Clint deals with the stresses of being a landlord, a superhero, and an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Hawkeye is a must-read for fans of Clint and Kate, and the perfect primer for the upcoming Disney+ series.
7 INFINITY
Before Hickman destroyed the Marvel Universe in Secret Wars, he unleashed Thanos on an Avengers-less Earth while they dealt with the cosmic threat of the Builders. Infinity introduced the Black Order, the powerful team of villains who were known as the Children of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Not only is Infinity worth a read to see the introduction of the Black Order, but it also includes an epic showdown between Thanos and Black Bolt which ultimately changes the world for the Inhumans and the X-Men for the next few years.
6 NEW X-MEN: E FOR EXTINCTION
The X-Men's popularity seems to come in waves throughout the decades, usually spurred either by great storytelling or popular creative teams or a unique mixture of both. Following the decrease in the X-Men's popularity after their best-selling boom in the 90s, Marvel's mutants were taken in a new direction by Grant Morrison.
New X-Men saw the team switch to black and yellow leather costumes and switched up the usual storylines and structures, creating one of the most iconic eras of the X-Men that has had a lasting effect. E For Extinction is a fantastic start to Morrison's time with the X-Men that is still being referenced in Hickman's Dawn of X-era.
5 JESSICA JONES: ALIAS
While fans of the Netflix series were saddened to see the final episode of Jessica Jones that heralded the end of an era, there is some comfort in the fact that there are still many stories featuring the character available in the comics. While Jones has taken on a more active role in superheroics as of late, her debut series Alias still retains the charm of her pulpy PI roots.
Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos created the character of Jessica Jones for Alias, and then retroactively introduced her into the Marvel Universe as a former superhero retired after a traumatic event with the villain known as the Purple Man. Jessica Jones fans of all kinds will enjoy revisiting her introduction to the Marvel Universe.
4 CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER
Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting did the unthinkable when they brought back Captain America's formerly deceased partner Bucky, which had always been one of Marvel's most high-profile and irreversible deaths next to Spider-Man's Uncle Ben.
However, Captain America: Winter Soldier was so well done that there were very little criticisms about the return of a character who had been dead for forty years, and the storyline was later adapted into the hit MCU Captain America sequel whose storyline will continue in the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney + series.
3 THE MIGHTY THOR
One of the biggest changes to Thor in recent years came from Jason Aaron and Russel Dauterman, who introduced Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor while Thor Odinson dealt with his unworthiness in part of the lead-up to Marvel's Asgardian comic event War of the Realms.
Now is a good time to revisit or explore Jane Foster's time with Mjolnir as the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder MCU film will see the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and her likely appearance as the Mighty Thor on the big screen.
2 SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN
Dan Slott spent a decade working with Peter Parker/Spider-Man, so much so he must have become bored with the character and decided it was time for a new man behind the mask. Following the "death" of Doctor Octopus, fans were shocked to learn that he had actually switched minds with Peter and taken over his body, while Peter died in Otto's broken former form.
Superior Spider-Man by Slott and Ryan Stegman features the earliest adventures of Otto Octavious as he strives to prove himself a better Spider-Man than Peter Parker while also working towards his own evil plans. The series explores the differences and similarities between the two enemies while upending Spider-Man's world as we knew it.
1 ANNIHILATION
The MCU comes up a lot when discussing our favorite storylines, as we have either already seen them adapted on the big screen or hope to see them adapted in the future. Marvel's Annihilation event is a great example of a potential storyline we might see in the MCU, as it gathers Marvel's various cosmic characters together to stop a universe-wide threat.
This event would lead to the eventual formation of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy and kick off years worth of storylines in the comics that can be enjoyed after finishing Annihilation. Regardless of it's potential MCU future, Annihilation is a must-read for fans of gigantic space-battles and deep character explorations.
