Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, was introduced in the Marvel Comics just as a friendly neighborhood superhero. However, as time went on and he became one of the most – if not the most – popular superheroes of all time, the storylines and the supervillains started becoming more complex and dark.

Spider-Man has gone up against some powerful mortals or superhumans in his very long history. There have been times when it has felt like he is standing in the presence of pure evil, while other times he has tried to persuade a supervillain to change their ways. Here are some of the coolest, lame, and dark Spider-Man villains.

10 Kraven The Hunter

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Kraven The Hunter is a very underrated Spider-Man supervillain and the one thing that makes him dark is the way he thinks about things. Apparently, because he is a hunter, he wants to prove to himself that he is really good at his job by hunting down and killing Spider-Man.

That's like a really odd way of processing things, isn't it? He could rather hunt criminals down but no, he wants to find Spider-Man for some reason. It is odd but Spider-Man and Kraven's fights are worth it.

9 Tombstone

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Tombstone stands out as a Spider-Man villain due to his absolutely brilliant '90s look. He doesn't have any superpowers and yet, he is one of the evilest crime lords in the whole of New York.

Since he was a kid, Tombstone acted like a bully and he eventually turned to the criminal lifestyle, taking on the likes of Spider-Man and Daredevil, in the process. He also filed his teeth with something which gave him the look of a vampire, intimidating his opponents in the process.

8 Kaine

Kaine is one of the many Spider-Man clones introduced while Peter Parker wore the mask. The process of cloning him went pretty bad, which left Kaine with a number of new superpowers but his mental state wasn't right, to say the least.

Kaine's known move, the Mark of Kaine, can wipe out people's faces in a jiffy and he has also killed one of his lovers. Although Kaine has always felt like an anti-hero, some of the things he has done merit him the tag of a supervillain.

7 Sauron

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Doctor Karl Lykos, aka Sauron, is someone from the X-Men Universe who battled Spider-Man during his link up with the mutants. This intimidating monster is really fearful to come up against because one of his powers includes draining the life out of mortals.

Sauron thrives on that; he requires the energy of different people to stay alive. Moreover, he has hypnotic eyes and razor-sharp claws. Sauron's skill set is really very unique.

6 White Rabbit

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

The White Rabbit's origin story is as dark as life gets. Lorina Dodson was born into a wealthy family, so she had everything she could desire but for some reason, she used to get bored a lot.

After being married to a man, Lorina didn't find any happiness and ended up killing her husband. She made it look like a suicide and then, she became the White Rabbit, a criminal roaming the streets of New York, with all her fancy gadgets. In another dark angle, she killed the son of a man, in front of him.

5 Kindred

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Kindred is a mythical being in the comics. He has had quite a journey as well. He was a human who was sent to hell and he became a demon, before climbing through the ranks and developing an obsession for Spider-Man.

Although Kindred wanted to keep Peter Parker safe, the way he went about things was a bit extreme, releasing mythical monsters like Tri-Sentinels on the loose. Parker traced down these little monsters before Kindred used them as a means to tell Spider-Man about his presence.

4 Morbius

Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Morbius is one of those characters who started out in the comics as a proper supervillain but he went on to become an anti-hero. Looking at his stature, face, and superpowers, one has to say that he is one of the darkest Spider-Man supervillains ever, thanks to his bloodthirst.

Morbius is a kind of hybrid between a vampire and a human, so it's understandable that he wants blood to survive. Obviously, Spider-Man isn't going to let him spill innocent blood, is he?

3 Mephisto

Marvel's version of the devil from hell, Mephisto not only makes deals to convert dead people into Ghost Rider, but he also has some sort of weird obsession with Spider-Man for some reason.

Over the years, in the different timelines, Mephisto has made many deals with numerous Spider-Men, ranging from Miles Morales to Peter Parker. He was once caught saying that he wanted to make the lives of all the Spider-Men a living hell. Way to go about things, Mephisto.

2 Carnage

Carnage is the evilest Symbiote in the Marvel Universe, by a mile and he can't even stay dead, can he? He always finds a way to come back and hurt more people, unlike Venom who has respect for the place he lives in.

Carnage has eaten humans alive, killed them just for fun, and once, he became a spine eating monster for some reason. He is definitely the most intimidating Symbiote ever and could be the strongest as well, although Toxin would rival him for that.

1 Norman Osborn

There's never been a darker Spider-Man villain than Norman Osborn, aka Green Goblin. Over the years, Osborn has taken up different positions in the Marvel Comics Universe, manipulating and killing many people from his position of privilege.

Osborn's genius-level intellect, coupled with his obsession with bringing down the good in the world, makes him a genuinely terrifying supervillain. Moreover, he was at the heart of the Dark Avengers storyline.
