From Sailor Moon to Pretty Cure, magical girl anime has a unique charm. Fans find themselves cheering on their favorite costumed fighters taking down evil monsters and saving the world one episode at a time. But it's always sad when the last episode rolls around, leaving behind a sense of emptiness until the next series.
Of course, well-written magical girl anime keep fans begging for more after the series ends. It could be loose ends that need tying or plotholes that need explaining. It happens to even the best of titles. However, some fans just want another season of a fantastic story with characters they adore.
10 Urahara Is A Mix Of Fashion & Magical Girl Aesthetics
Colorful costumes are a necessary magical girl staple. Character designers go above and beyond to create the cutest and flashiest outfits to keep audiences entertained. Anime centered around fashion are rare to come by, but Urahara succeeds in combining both.
Fans of Harajuku fashion can appreciate the diversity in the characters' styles in Urahara and even how they express themselves as magical girls. Although the anime was short, it left fans wanting more. A second season could act as a prequel and showcase the girls discovering their love of fashion.
9 Fans Want To See More Of Revolutionary Girl Utena's Primary Romance
As a magical girl anime, Revolutionary Girl Utena has been hailed as a feminist LGBTQ+ icon for decades. While it's more unorthodox than its peers — since Utena doesn't rely on glittery transformations and supernatural attacks — it continues to inspire future magical girl anime.
In addition, Revolutionary Girl Utena features lesbian relationships, as Utena and Anthy's romance blossoms closer to the ending. Fans would love to see how their relationship continues even after Anthy is freed from her curse. Seeing a season dedicated to their lives after the academy would be a breath of fresh air.
8 Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Is A "Disney Meets Shojo" Fantasy
Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch was the mermaid anime fans didn't know they needed. Inspired by The Little Mermaid, this series took notes from the old-school shojo and even female-oriented cartoons of its time, primarily over-the-top relationship drama. But despite the emotional twists and turns, fans ate it up.
The pastel retro aesthetic is definitely there. Lucia and the other mermaid princesses are a delight, and the romantic relationships and friendships they build are wholesome and sweet. In addition, the girls create some of the most enchanting music. Another season — possibly about the manga's sequel or an epilogue delving into their futures — would be ideal.
7 Magical Princess Minky Momo's Third Season Could Also Be Remake
Unfortunately, Magical Princess Minky Momo's creator, Takeshi Shudo, passed away before he could bring the third installment to life. The first two anime were widely popular in the 80s and 90s, but it wasn't as prominent in the West. Exposing younger fans to older series, particularly magical girl anime, could introduce fans to this widely underrated title.
Like most vintage magical girl anime, neither Minky Momo series follow the widely-popularized "monster of the week" plot. Momo uses her magic to solve social issues around her town. Unfortunately, they did derail from Shudo's original vision, having much sadder endings than intended. A third season could serve as a reboot to honor the late creator's ideals.
6 Fans Need More Parody Anime Like Magical Pâtissière Kosaki-Chan!!
Nisekoi fanatics may remember this two-episode OVA about one of the manga's gag chapters. Magical Pâtissière Kosaki-chan!! gave the secondary love interest, Kosaki, center stage as a hilariously-embarrassed magical girl. Although it primarily satirized magical girl anime, it was nonetheless delightful.
Kosaki gradually loses screen time as Raku and Chitoge's relationship matures. Considering she was popular with viewers, this OVA series allowed her to shine. The other girls also appear, adding to the hilarity of Kosaki's magical girl duties. Magical Pâtissière Kosaki-chan!! could be a quick favorite with a more fleshed-out second season.
5 An AU Anime Like Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya Can Create An Infinite Number Of Fun Stories
It wasn't a gag series like Magical Pâtissière Kosaki-chan!!, but the vast and lore-heavy Fate/Stay Night franchise excelled at creating a cute, entertaining magical girl series. Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya gave a popular side character, Illya, more time to shine in an alternate universe.
The plot is more fleshed out, with other Fate characters making cameos here and there. Illya has a chance to grow as a character and a magical girl while working alongside a new group of comrades. Several seasons have been released already, but Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya has become so popular with magical girl fans that another season couldn't hurt.
4 Fans Need A Better Ending For Puella Magi Madoka Magica's Homura
Puella Magi Madoka Magica became a trailblazer in 2011, introducing modern-day anime fans to how dark magical girl anime can be. The stakes are high, and the twists are uncomfortable to watch — but it's hard to look away.
While Madoka's story concludes by the twelfth episode, Homura is the sole survivor who succumbs to her despair. The Rebellion movie series explores Homura's descent into madness and her desperation to correct Kyubey's wrongs. Despite her sacrifice, fans were heartbroken to see her give up so much for the people she cared for. Another season could bring her a happy closure.
3 Magical Girl Raising Project's Light Novel Had Much More Material To Work With
The "dark magical girl" subgenre expanded after Puella Magi Madoka Magica's ending and birthed several unique tiles. Magical Girl Raising Project takes notes from its predecessor. It adds even greater stakes, utilizing social media and the "survival of the fittest" concept not commonly explored in magical girl anime.
As part of the competition, the girls must collect "Magical Candies" from doing good deeds to win a chance to become a real magical girl. But the rules suddenly twist, and the game quickly becomes a bloody free-for-all. Despite Magical Girl Raising Projec's ending, plenty of material from the light novel could be adapted into more seasons.
2 Even After Sailor Moon Ends, Not Much Is Said About Chibiusa
Even with the Sailor Moon Crystal's conclusion steadily approaching, it's not enough for hardcore fans of the franchise. Some characters' backstories, specifically Usagi's daughter, Chibiusa, haven't been fully explored.
Since her debut, Chibiusa gave fans snippets of her life back in the Silver Millenium. She lived in her mother's shadow, wishing to become her own person, but no one knows how Chibiusa grew up after the series' ending. Her budding romance with Helios and friendship with Hotaru shows her growth, but another season could delve into her life as the future queen.
1 Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear-Card Gives Sakura A New Challenge
Like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura is a magical girl staple. Compared to its battle-oriented peers, the anime stuck to its predecessors and focused more on Sakura using magic to collect the ever-elusive Clow Cards. Airing in 2018, the series had improved art and more mysteries for Sakura to uncover.
Now in junior high, Sakura is learning to control her magic while investigating her new, almost twin-like classmate. Cardcaptor Sakura reintroduced the franchise to anime fans, but it ended just after 22 episodes. The manga is far from complete and reveals more about Sakura's classmate's background. Fans deserve to see Sakura uncover the truth.
