It was recently announced that Jack Black will be reprising his greatest voice-over role as Po from Kung Fu Panda in an upcoming Netflix series. After the trilogy of Dreamworks movies came to a close, Black took a step back from the franchise and its subsequent kids series on Nickelodeon and Prime Video. And while the Kung Fu Panda franchise is certainly iconic, it doesn't come close to encapsulating what Black's entertainment has given to the world.

Black's career started back in 1984 when he began bouncing from TV movie to TV movie. As his career started to gain momentum, he popped up in small roles in quintessential early '90s films like Waterworld and Demolition Man. The back half of the 1990s is when his career really took off thanks to projects like Tenacious DMars Attacks! and High Fidelity. Flash forward 20 years, and he is still going strong with nearly five million subscribers on YouTube and great franchises like Jumanji. Let's take a look back at some of the best films of this comedian's illustrious career.

Jack Black Goes Back to School as Dewey Finn in School of Rock

No article about Jack Black would be complete without at least mentioning this 2003 film. While Black had been working consistently as a comedic actor and musician before his turn as Dewey Finn, his performance in Richard Linklater's School of Rock made him a household name. The film walks the line of wholesome and raunchy comedy so well that it is a perfect film for all ages. While Linklater is a wiz behind the camera, it is Black's iconic performance that solidifies this film as a comedic classic. The film became such a cultural cornerstone that it warranted a musical adaptation in 2015. School of Rock is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV.

There Might Not Be a Better Pick Than Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

Jack Burns The Mic In Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny

While Jack Black's career was certainly rising during the '90s, it was the creation of Tenacious D that changed the game. Tenacious D is a parody rock band that is comprised of Black and his best friend and bandmate Kyle Gass. After a successful short series on HBO, Black and Gass decided to make a movie that chronicled the creation of the band and their search for the Pick of Destiny, a magical rock artifact lost to time. The movie is packed to the brim with hilarious cameos, laugh-out-loud gags and some very catchy tunes. Anyone who isn't familiar with Jack Black's work in Tenacious D doesn't really know Jack Black. Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Get a Heavy Dose of Nostalgia With Be Kind Rewind

This one is a deep cut that even some of Black's more hardcore fans might not know. This buddy comedy was released in 2008 and stars Black and multi-hyphenate performer and activist Mos Def. The two play best friends, one of whom works at a failing VHS rental store. When all of the content on their inventory is accidentally erased, Jerry, played by Black, comes up with the idea to recreate all of the iconic films like Ghostbusters or Robocop with a home video budget. The film was helmed by Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind director Michael Gondry, and while it is not his greatest directorial work, this goofy and pop culture reference-filled movie is a fun watch. Be Kind Rewind can be rented on Prime Video and Apple TV.

Black as Bernie Is Brutally Underrated

This Jack Black performance may be his best work and simultaneously his most underrated. This eerie dark comedy reunited Black, as well as co-star Matthew McConaughey, with director Richard Linklater in 2012. The indie takes place in a small Texan town and follows the true story of a mortician assistant named Bernie, an active community member who quickly befriends an elderly wealthy widow. Black is truly brilliant in this movie and delivers a performance that gives insight into how smart he truly is, a quality many fans might not attribute to the actor, who primarily plays total buffoons. Bernie is available to stream with ads on Tubi, Peacock and IMDbTV.

Miles Brings the Laughs in The Holiday

This holiday favorite is one of the best romantic comedies of the early aughts. Before this point in his career, the idea of Jack Black playing a romantic interest was laughable. Surprisingly at the time, Black brought a heartfelt sincerity to his role as a composer named Miles who's looking for love and made his relationship with Kate Winslet's Iris believable. That being said, without Black, this film would probably just be considered a romance movie. He certainly tones down his usual funnyman antics to fit the film's tone, but there are moments where director Nancy Meyers lets him loose. One scene, in particular, that takes place in a Blockbuster Video will have anyone in stitches. The Holiday is available to stream on Hulu and Netflix, along with tons of other great romantic movies and shows.
