If you're a horror hound or even just an anime fan you're definitely going to want to check out the anime on this list.

10 TOKYO GHOUL: RE: SCORE 7.1

If you're simply wanting to watch the breakout horror anime of the year, look no further than the Tokyo Ghoul series. Tokyo Ghoul started in the year 2014 and ended four years later in 2018. However, Tokyo Ghoul: re isn't the beginning of the series but is the sequel of the original anime. Therefore explaining the premise might spoil a bit of the original season.

The basic gist of the series is that our main character is living a normal life until a date with a weird girl who nearly murders him. He awakens as a half-human, half-ghoul meaning he now has a taste for human flesh. He now has to deal with other ghouls, both friendly and not and has to hide his newfound transformation.

9 HIGHSCHOOL OF THE DEAD: SCORE 7.3

Highschool of the Dead is one of the most talked-about anime series of the 2010s. This commotion wasn't brought about due to the horror, despite the topic of this list, but the sheer absurdity of the entire show. Seriously, if you're looking for a tongue in cheek, overly perverted, nonsense filled series that features a gore-filled zombie apocalypse then this anime is for you.

Sadly, Highschool of the Dead was canceled and series author, Daisuke Sato, confirmed that it won't be returning as he has grown sick which makes it hard to continue working on the series.

8 AKAME GA KILL: SCORE 7.9

akame ga kill main characters in night raid

Akame Ga Kill is no doubt another break out horror anime of the last decade. A story of a country born and bred boy named Tatsumi who dreams to make a name for himself by joining his country's army. However, he fails and is tricked into losing all his money. No worries though, at least he's able to join the side of the bad guy assassin group called night raid.

That's all we'll be telling you though as telling anymore could spoil the build-up the series executes so well. Just know mystery and survival take the spotlight in this anime.

7 TOKYO GHOUL: SCORE 7.9

The series that started it all. Tokyo Ghoul, of course, is the prequel series to the previously mentioned Tokyo Ghoul: re. It features the same plot and premise but is obviously where you'll be wanting to start in your journey into the world of Ghouls.

The series is praised for its characters, action, great plot, surprising twists, gore, and of course horror themes. There's not much more than we said earlier so instead of reading more about it how about going ahead and start watching.

6 RE: ZERO: SCORE 8.0

Definitely an anime you've seen, even if you haven't watched it. If you've only seen the countless memes featuring the characters then you should definitely give it a shot if you're looking for an isekai anime that subverts every isekai trope you can think of while introducing a lot of death and gore.

It all starts when our main character, Subaru Natsuki, is transported into an all-new world as is the beginning in many isekai series. However, as soon as he's brought into this world and introduced to a new female partner they are both brutally murdered. He awakens in the same spot and realizes whenever he dies he must restart the same way.

5 JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: SCORE 8.4

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is another series that you wouldn't expect to be horror based but it is, in fact, one of the most horror based series on the list. Each entry in this series is more drenched in horror elements than the last.

Phantom Blood has vampires, Battle Tendency has ancient beings, Stardust Crusaders follows a monster of the week formula featuring actual monsters, and Crazy Diamond is as mysterious as horror mystery anime come.

JoJo's is a series that can manage to mash multiple genres into one and it is definitely no slouch on the horror end of that deal.

The story of a kid esper with crazy psychic powers that must be kept under control, as he tries to live a normal life. He was raised by a fraud psychic and only wishes to be a normal popular kid at school. Too bad that's not what he's going to get because he keeps running into trouble at every turn, especially because his immense power keeps bringing him face to face with other espers and the supernatural.
