10 Tokyo Ghoul

In an alternate reality, ghouls roam the earth. Ghouls are creatures that must eat human flesh to survive, despite the fact they look like normal people. They try to live in secret so they aren't caught and killed.

Series main character, Ken Kaneki, is forced through a horrific surgery that transforms him into a half-ghoul. He now must begin to eat human flesh in order to keep himself alive. Luckily he is taken in by a group of ghouls who try to help him fit and maintain his normal life but it's not as easy as he wishes it would be.

9 Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate is actually an original anime series not based on the Hellsing manga. However, all of the Hellsing series is worth watching, but this one is considered one of the best and scariest. The overall premise of the series follows the clandestine Hellsing Operation which fights against the hideous monsters roaming England.

They fight beasts such as ghouls, vampires, and more. Hellsing is extremely gory and violent. Also, if you thought Hellsing sounded similar to "Van Helsing" there is a reason for that which is explained in the series. Abraham Van Helsing has ties to the original Hellsing organization.

8 Mononoke

Mononoke, not to be confused with Princess Mononoke, is a spin-off of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. This series, which aired in 2007, follows the medicine seller. He is continually forced up against new supernatural threats during the Edo period in Japan.

He has the ability to use his sword as a tool to exorcise demons but can only do so once he learns the spirit's motive, truth, and form. Despite the series only airing for 12 episodes, it became pretty popular. It consists of five specific arcs. The series unique animation style also makes it a worthwhile watch.

7 M3 the Dark Metal

This is an anime series where the manga was created after the show. M3 the Dark Metal follows a group of boys and girls who meet at a young age in a mysterious realm of darkness. While there they encounter a horrific substance called Necrometal that devours everything in its path.

Large combat robots known as Vess are used to fight off anything from the realm. Eventually, a monstrous creature called a Corpse appears. It can kill anyone who hears its fateful melody. The children, now grown, must work together to defeat it once and for all.

6 Ghost Hunt

If you're a fan of ghosts and paranormal activity, then Ghost Hunt will probably appeal to you. Unfortunately, the larger story was left unfinished as the light novels were not completed. The anime is 25 episodes long and follows Mai Taniyama.

Mai becomes part of a psychic research team. They investigate strange paranormal phenomena. Mai also has her own psychic abilities. Her abilities and her function on the research team become a significant focus of the overarching plotline. The series has a few surprising twists you may not see coming.

5 JoJo's Bizzare Adventure

Out of everything on this list, JoJo's Bizzare Adventure might be one you've heard about the most lately. The anime has been on for a while but recently released a new season just this past year, and it only wrapped up this July.

The show follows the Joestar family across multiple generations. Each family member is destined to fight against the supernatural using their abilities. It's more supernatural-focused than it is horror, perse, but there are still plenty of nightmarish moments spread across the series. It is one of the best-selling manga in history.

4 Parasyte

Not only is Parasyte a horrific sci-fi tale, but it specializes in body horror. The series has both a manga series, two live-action films, and an anime series. One day, a high school student wakes up to find his left hand has been taken over by a worm-like parasitic creature, known as the Parasytes.

He is able to prevent it from entering his brain so both beings learn to exist as separate entities sharing one body. They form an unlikely bond as they're forced to fight against the other Parasytes intent on taking over every human they can find.

3 Berserk

Berserk is a dark fantasy horror series that is both a popular manga and anime series. There are two versions of the anime, the initial 1997 run, and the newer 2016 run. Fans have their own opinions about which they prefer but the series is known for its large amounts of graphic violence and sex, and the stories are different so be sure to watch them all.

There is also a planned third season of Berserk that should be coming soon. Berserk follows the adventures of a swordsman named Guts. Guts is a mercenary who hunts beasts.

2 Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is one of the most anime and manga series of all time. The series was popular enough to get its own attraction at Universal Studios Japan. It's also extremely gory and terrifying. The series follows a society that lives behind walls to keep them safe from the Titans. Titans are monstrous, humanoid creatures that eat people.

Like Attack on Titan, Death Note is also one of the most popular anime and manga series of all time. The story follows Light Yagami who falls into the possession of the mysterious Death Note. It is a journal in which you can write down the name of anyone and they will die instantly. But you have to know their real name for it to work. You can also change their time of death and method of how they will die.

Owning the Death Note also means you will have a Shinigami attacked to you, as they are attached to the Death Notes and Light is in possession of Ryuks. Death Note is a psychological thriller that pits the smartest minds against one another to try and bring Light's serial killer alter-ego, Kira, to justice.
