Godzilla is the King of the Monsters and the most famous movie kaiju of all time, rivaled only by the Eighth Wonder of the World, King Kong. With the two titans about to square off later on this year in the film Godzilla vs. Kong, now is the perfect time for gamers to look back fondly on some of the best Godzilla games ever made.

While the character's overall record in video games is rather spotty, with most titles consisting of rather simplistic button-mashing, there are some gems among them. The best Godzilla games make the most of monster-brawling and city-smashing as best as they could.

5. Godzilla: Monster War (Kaijuu Daikessen)

One of the older games on this list, this Japan-only 2D fighting game for the Super Famicom would serve as the basis for future Godzilla monster fighting games. Featuring a surprisingly robust list of playable characters for the time, from Mothra to Biollante, it also includes the space battleship Gotengo as an unlockable character, a classic monster-slaying vessel that was also featured in Godzilla: Final Wars. Really, the game's only shortcoming is that it never released outside of Japan, despite being announced for a U.S. release shortly before the end of the Super Nintendo's life.

4. Godzilla: The Game (2014)

The most recent triple-A Godzilla game on this list, this is essentially a slower HD remake (or retread) of the previous action titles made by Pipeworks Software. It features multiple game modes, which usually involve destroying specific targets in the city, as well as an online multiplayer mode where you fight other monsters. While the game features slightly fewer monsters than the previous Unleashed, it does boast the largest collection of playable Godzillas, including the original 1954 incarnation and 2014 Monsterverse version by Legendary Pictures.

3. Godzilla: Unleashed

Pipeworks Studio's last and most ambitious Godzilla game, it essentially features the same gameplay as the company's other Godzilla titles. However, Unleashed introduced some new features, such as Surges that affect a monster's attributes and a multi-faction campaign. Unleashed has the largest roster of any Godzilla game, with 26 characters including multiple versions of Godzilla and two original monsters made for the game. This would be the last major Godzilla release for almost seven years, and serves as a decent finish to the cult Godzilla trilogy.

2. Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee

The first Godzilla title ever designed by Pipeworks Software (and probably the first 3D Godzilla game most audiences ever played), this was essentially a dream come true for fans, as it featured 12 of the most beloved kaiju in the franchise duking it out in massive battles in destructive environments. While it has the smallest roster among the 3D Godzilla games, it possesses an edge over its sequel with faster and more balanced gameplay.

1. Godzilla: Save the Earth

The sequel to Destroy All Monsters MeleeSave the Earth features much of the same gameplay with a couple of new modes and features, such as a challenge mode and online play for the Xbox version. While it is a little more sluggish than its predecessor and relies a bit too much on beam spamming, it makes up for these shortcomings with a large roster (which finally includes Mothra), better graphics and a stunning opening cutscene.
