There are so many Disney animated movies that, at this point, it can be hard to keep them all straight, especially when it comes to the characters. Everyone remembers the main characters, but a sidekick has to be pretty special to stay in the minds and hearts of the audience.

A good sidekick adds to the story and often provides contrast to the main character as well as a good chunk of comedic relief. While most Disney sidekicks spend a lot of time on screen, not all of them do, but sometimes the ones who show up sparingly and give the protagonist advice or a much-needed laugh are the ones who stand out the most.

12 Jock, Trusty, And Peg Support Lady

pjimage-(1)-8

In Lady and the Tramp, Jock and Trusty live in the same neighborhood as Lady and live the same lifestyle. They are both of an older generation, so they are always looking out for Lady. Jock gives the best advice, and Trusty is there for moral support.

Peg isn't so much a sidekick as she is a scene-stealer, but she gives great support to Lady when she gets taken by the dogcatcher. Peg's been in the clink for a minute, and she is very familiar with Tramp. She is savvy and motherly, but she really just acts like the cool aunt.

11 Meeko And Flit Are The Proverbial Devil And Angel On The Shoulders Of Pocahontas

meeko and flit Cropped

In Pocahontas, Meeko is a raccoon who loves to eat, specifically John Smith's biscuits, and Flit is a hummingbird. These two characters are a perfect duo because they are always with Pocahontas serving as the proverbial devil (Meeko) and the angel (Flit) on her shoulders. The two cute animals also add some much-needed comedic relief from time to time. Meeko is always getting Flit into trouble and supports Pocahontas's love, while Flit is always a little grumpy and supports her father's wishes over hers.

10 Gurgi Is Cute But Cowardly

Gurgi smiling with hands out from The Black Cauldron.

The Black Cauldron follows Taran, who teams up with Princess Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam, and a wild creature named Gurgi to destroy a mystical object, The Black Cauldron, so The Horned King doesn't use it doesn't use its powers to rule the world.

Gurgi is a small, gopher-like troll who is smart, funny, loves apples (which he calls munchies), and has a speech impediment. He is adorable with scruffy fur and blue eyes, although he typically acts very cowardly. He seems very fearful the whole movie, but he makes a sacrifice at the end that only strengthens his character.

9 Terk And Tantor Are Always There For Tarzan

Terk is Tarzan's big sister, and she loves telling people what to do. Even though Tarzan can easily pin her down, he lets Terk keep bossing him around because he knows she means well. That's why Terk is so wonderful; she comes across as tough, but she truly values her relationships, especially with Tarzan and Tantor.

Tantor is everything-phobic and cowardly, but he is a great friend to have because he always goes along with Tarzan's crazy plans. They tease him a lot, but he knows when to step up and be daring.

8 Jaq and Gus Keep Cinderella Laughing

There are many mice in Cinderella, but Gus and Jaq definitely stand out from the pack. Jaq, who is quick-witted and fast on his toes, is a creator of "household mischief," and he is certainly good at it. He is the bravest and confronts Lucifer alone.

Gus isn't the smartest mouse, and he is always hungry. Due to his constant eating, he is the plumpest, and therefore Lucifer's favorite target. Gus tries to be brave for Cinderella, but Jaq always stops him or steps in to help him.

7 Louis Keeps The Beat

In The Princess and the Frog, Louis is an alligator with a passion for jazz. He is clumsy and fun, and incredibly talented on the trumpet. His dream is to be in a jazz band with human musicians. And while he can be quite cowardly, there are moments when he can be brave and upbeat. He is what's known as a gentle giant.

Louis is a great addition to the movie because his dream of being in a human jazz band seems as impossible as Tiana getting her restaurant. But when they come together, with Naveen and Ray, too, they bring hope and happiness out to each other.

6 Lumiere And Cogsworth Are Great Frenemies

Lumiere and Cogsworth in Beauty and The Beast

In Beauty and the Beast, Lumiere is a sort of maître d' around the castle who is very welcoming to Belle when she arrives. Lumiere is typically cheeky and fun-loving, sometimes to a fault, as he often breaks Beast's rules. He also sings "Be Our Guest," which is no doubt a favorite from the movie.

Cogsworth is the polar opposite of Lumiere. He is responsible and pompous and gets irritated easily, something Lumiere loves to exploit. Cogsworth never wishes ill on anyone and is loyal to the Beast, who he genuinely cares for. As a pair, the two share a friendly rivalry throughout the film.

Kronk in The Emperor's New Groove

"And let's not forget Yzma's right-hand man. Every decade or so, she gets a new one. This year's model is called Kronk."

Kronk is the dim-witted henchman of Yzma, the main antagonist of The Emperor's New Groove, but he doesn't have a wicked bone in his body and he really just wants to help everyone, which traps him in a constant moral dilemma. Kronk, who apparently makes one mean spinach puff, provides a good chunk of the comedy in the movie and was popular enough to get his own straight-to-video movie, Kronk's New Groove.

4 Genie Stole The Show

The Genie in Aladdin

Aladdin's Genie has become one of Disney's most iconic characters. Aladdin finds him in the Cave of Wonders and becomes his master by rubbing the lamp, and the two end up becoming great friends, with Aladdin using his last wish to free the Genie, so he doesn't have to live in that lamp or follow anyone's orders anymore.

Genie, played by Robin Williams, is bubbly and loud and sometimes manic, but he gives great advice. Despite being one of the most powerful entities in the universe, he is incredibly kind and friendly, and he loves to help people with his wise advice.

3 Sebastian Is Very Nervous

Sebastian is first and foremost an esteemed conductor and composer of the royal court, but he has many other responsibilities as well. He is the king's advisor, which really means that he has to keep Poseidon's youngest daughter, Ariel, out of trouble. He has a constant sense of urgency and anxiety and is always on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

Sebastian is an incredibly important character in The Little Mermaid because Ariel wouldn't have gotten her happily ever after without him. He can be uptight, but he loves Ariel and always helps her - even when helping her almost gets him boiled alive. He also sings "Under The Sea" and "Kiss The Girl," two songs that have become Disney classics.

2 Mushu Is A Fun Guardian

Mushu Cropped

When we first meet Mushu in Mulan, he is a family guardian, living the life of luxury. But he quickly finds himself kicked out, and appoints himself to be Mulan's personal guardian. He goes off to war with Mulan and keeps her secret; he even helps her keep up the act.

Along with being the main source of jokes in the movie, Mushu provides an important contrast to Mulan; she is usually calm and calculated while he is wild and impulsive and sometimes selfish. Mushu even has his own sidekick, Cri-Kee, who deserves an honorable mention.

1 Timon And Pumbaa Gave The World Hakuna Matata

timon and pumbaa in the lion king

Timon likes his carefree lifestyle where all he does is eat grubs and sleep. He can be narcissistic and cowardly while Pumbaa is always upbeat and open-hearted with a surprising amount of knowledge and common sense. Timon most definitely feels protective over Pumbaa, and the two are a perfect pair who work in harmony.

The Lion King would most definitely not be the sensation it is today without Timon and Pumbaa. They are both outcasts, so they stick together and live an easy-going lifestyle by following their motto, "Hakuna Matata" which, as they explain, means no worries for the rest of your days.
