For a long time, gaming has been a great way for people to unwind. From humble 2-D arcade games, gaming has now evolved thanks to better, more powerful gaming consoles. November 2013 saw the launch of Sony’s eighth-generation console, the PlayStation 4. The console was a massive upgrade from its predecessor, the PS3, with markedly improved graphics and better overall gameplay—even compared to the best games on PlayStation 3.

In the years since its launch, there have been roughly 2,500 games released on the PS4 platform. The genres of games are plenty, from adventure games to sports games. Players find themselves spoilt for choice. Cooperative games or co-op games, in short, have emerged as a fan-favorite among gamers the world over.

This rise in popularity of coop games is down to the fact that these games allow players to work as teammates. Players love the feeling of camaraderie that comes with completing tasks and missions with friends or family. Co-op games, it seems, aren’t losing their fan base any time soon. Here are the ten best co-op games for PS4 of 2020.

This intriguing couch coop cooking game allows you and your friends to run a smooth kitchen by preparing dishes and serving them up against a clock. It’s not always a case of the more the merrier, though, with too many players potentially creating mayhem. It’s one of the less conventional coop games yet it carries loads of fun.

The game is set in the Onion Kingdom which faces an attack from Ever Peckish, a ginormous spaghetti and meatballs monster with an insatiable appetite. The king, a full mustache onion with his dog Kevin takes you back in time so you can sharpen your cooking (and coop) skills before facing the monster again. You have to fulfill orders in a variety of kitchens scattered across the land, each with its own testing layouts and gimmicks.

The gameplay, while seeming deceptively simple, moves at a swift pace. The orders appear on the top left of your screen and you must then prepare the corresponding ingredients, assemble them on a plate and serve it. Faster food delivery could mean more tips while failing to serve will lose you points.

Overcooked demands a high level of coordination and that’s what makes it such an amazing coop game. You have to coordinate how you’ll switch between two chefs to juggle the vast number of tasks. However, part of the fun comes in the chaos - when someone leaves the food on the fire for too long which then spreads all over the kitchen. The game can get a bit frustrating but greater still carries lots of fun.

You get to experience the myriad of variables that pros face when lining up a shot. Wind speed and direction, choice of club, and yardage are all factors you need to consider while playing. You'll soon come to understand that hitting a shot is a result of a variety of calculated ingredients.

The game features a classic three-click swing mechanic where you click to start, click to set power, and a final click to determine your shot’s accuracy. It’s a matter of mastering your desired mater length and the reflexes you can pull off. This method of control is common among contemporary golf games and adds to the challenge of finding the hole.

There’s no other way you can live your ridiculous childhood fantasies other than playing ARK: Survival Evolved. This game provides you with exciting levels as you start the game at the lowest level, garner points, and grow. ARK: Survival Evolved has multiple sprawling maps, which are referred to as ARKs.

The game starts by dumping you on the beaches of a massive island with no weapon except your fists. After that, the challenge is to stay fed and hydrated. At the same time, avoid any clash with dinosaurs. While staying fed and hydrated, your primary goal is to ensure you level up.

On finishing the primary level, the game feels advanced due to the gentle flow of technological progress. The goal is to stock up ammunition while protecting yourself from dinos and beasts by fending them away off fights. In the advanced level of the game, your ammo and fortress advance and become sturdy enough.

The game, however, needs a lot of resilience as it’s often hard to stock up ammunition during the early stages. It needs menial grinding to reach high tiers of the game. Playing solo during the early stages is hard, therefore to wade through quickly, try PvP as other players will help with the division of labor.

While still on PvP, players are both assets and liabilities. It’s, therefore, necessary to keep an eye for looters who are after your stock. To protect your stuff, liaise with a functional and robust tribe of players who’ll help you protect your stuff. In offline mode, playing the game can prove to be hard, if you fail, you have to replay, and this will ultimately cost you artifacts needed to summon the boss and time.

ARK: Survival Evolved

The Lego Ninjago is a short and dynamic new combat system. The tweaks to aging mechanics make it one of the most exciting Lego games in a long time. The eight-story chapters rehash The Lego Ninjago Movie. The story revolves around green ninja Lloyd and his ninja companions, who are defenders of Ninjago City.

The Lord Garmadon, Lloyd’s dad, and his army of aquatic-themed mechs and thugs terrorize Ninjago City. And it is Lloyd’s responsibility to defeat his dad. Eager to beat his dad and restore peace in Ninjago City, Lloyd messes up and puts the whole city in danger. The only way to save his city is by partaking a spiritual journey to the heart of the island to gain his spiritual power and save his city.

The combat system in the game is not minimalistic, and given that its release date coincided with the movie release date, the game went overboard in that. The Lego Ninjago Video game is less floaty and more finesse. Its enthralling experience stems from their enemies getting wiser per every challenge. Therefore, players have to mix things up to wade through.

As you progress with the game, the combat features offer more fun. Unlike other Lego Series Games, each level has no stud goal to achieve. Having done away with stud collecting means that players can play the game with minimal distractions. Instead of a per-level stud meter, a multi-leveled meter follows the player throughout the game. Every time you fill the meter, you gain a stud-collecting rank.

Key Features
  • Based on a movie
  • Combat
  • Action-filled
  • Eight chapters of a storyline

  • No penalty for missing a goal
  • No per-level stud collecting

Lego City Undercover

Knack was too punitive for a kids’ game. However, its sequel Knack 2 has proven to be the ideal game for all ages. Knack 2 has a solid mix of gameplay elements anchored by fun combat and good pacing. Knack, the leading game character, still maintains his core abilities in this sequel.

Similar to the last game, Knack can gain an armor-like shell made up of different materials. One of these materials is ice, ice Knack can freeze enemies on the spot, and can also lock gears in place. To top it all, shifting back to small Knack in any of his forms lets you leave behind a statue to weigh down switches.

The checkpointing of this Co-op game is generous. In that, if you miss a jump or get killed in combat, you’re only moments away from where you died. Generally, it means the frustration levels are low, and the standard difficulty levels provide minor challenges.

To add to its robust combat system is a neat touch of ability to stun enemies whenever you shatter a sunstone. As you progress, more combat capabilities emerge making the game more complex.

The game also decides when and how to use these abilities, making it engaging. In a nutshell, Knack 2 provides you with a well-paced action platform with puzzle elements and the ability to progress in the game continually. An enthralling gaming experience it is.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game takes place in 1991, two years after the whole Ghostbusters II. As the story begins, a museum exhibit on Gozer the Gozerian sends out a pulse of energy. This pulse of power brings a massive influx of new and old ghosts back to New York City. Gracie Mansion subsidizes the mayhem allowing the heroes to seek further help from you, the player.

As a player, you’ll be testing out some of Egon’s experimental gear while helping in cleaning up the town. It allows you to switch to a female character, and its graphics and resolutions are top-notch. The detailing in the game should not be overlooked, as the game developer shows the utmost commitment to detail.

Most instructions of the game are verbal with the health, weapon heat level getting displayed on the Rookie’s Proton Pack, à la Dead Space. And to successfully trap ghosts, you need to wrangle them towards your trap, close enough to suck them in. The game graphics work by rehashing the movie scenes via sizzling red proton streams and the cone of intense light drawing in ghosts that distort and stretch ghosts as they’re slurped into the trap.

Also, most of the cutscenes are in-engine ones and often displayed at up to 4K, therefore matching the moment-to-moment gameplay. The levels, however, are long, and the lip-syncing is shoddily done just like in the 2009 version. Overall the game is aesthetically good with further remastering needed.

Key Features
  • Based on a movie
  • Lip-synced characters
  • Remastered
Pros
  • Multiplayer feature
  • Good graphics
  • Characters are from the original movie
  • Interesting story
Cons
  • Short story
  • Terrible mechanics

Like the Dark Souls games that came before it, as well as Bloodborne, Dark Souls III is an amazingly intense RPG featuring tens of insanely difficult boss fights, hair-pulling-ly tough enemies, and a fascinating (but deadly) world to explore. And also like the previous Dark Souls games, Dark Souls III includes a co-op multiplayer mode that isn’t to be missed.

Unlike the majority of co-op titles, Dark Souls III isn’t as cut-and-dry as selecting an option from the main menu to start up a co-op session. Rather cooperative play takes place fairly seamlessly, allowing one player to head straight into another’s game, where they then can take down bosses and fight baddies together. And given the sheer difficulty of some sections of Dark Souls III, you’ll often need that helping hand. From start to finish, there are a plethora of bosses that can handily take you down, so having a friend there to help you out almost feels like a necessity at times.

While many Dark Souls players have spent their hours defeating bosses on their lonesome, Dark Souls III is just as great a co-op experience as any, and better than most due to the utter brutality of late-game bosses. So if you’re looking for one of the best co-op games for PS4, look no further than Dark Souls III.

  • Takes place in an interconnecting world
  • Includes numerous optional bosses
  • Features several extremely difficult bosses
  • Has multiplayer
Pros
  • Gameplay mechanics are fantastic
  • Difficulty is rewarding
  • Score is incredible

Cooperative play doesn’t exactly come front and center when it comes to Grand Theft Auto games. Most of the titles have been single-player, placing a focus on causing chaos as a ne’erdowell whose primary interests lie in harming innocent civilians, hijacking vehicles, and making tons of money via precarious means. And while Grand Theft Auto V definitely has its share of that, and then some, it also launched the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto Online, which GTA developer Rockstar routinely updates to this day.

Although a lot of Grand Theft Auto Online involves wacky hijinks and a fair share of solo play, there is plenty of fun to be had in a cooperative capacity. In addition to straight-up wreaking havoc on the city of Los Santos with other players, one of the highlights of Grand Theft Auto Online is the ability to pull off heists with other players. During heists, for which there is a set plan in motion, each player takes a particular role within said plan. As a general rule, your job is to adhere to that role as closely as possible, though if things go south, you will need to improvise.

Overall, these heists—of which there are several—are a ton of fun and earn Grand Theft Auto Online a “cooperative” descriptor on their own. As such, so long as you can tolerate some level of GTA Online shenanigans involving spontaneous death by gunfire, it is quite easily one of the better choices for cooperative games on PS4.

Grand Theft Auto V

The need for interconnection and the thrill of a greater challenge are perhaps two of the many reasons co-op games seem to attract so much attention. Quite simply, from the best co-op games on PC to those on the subject console, cooperative gameplay has modified the single-player gaming mode allowing extra players to come in. Playing together allows players to help each other in different ways from healing, passing weapons, or providing cover for a teammate when needed.

Now, with faster and more reliable internet connections, gamers get to compete in coop games against players from all over the world. Game servers run via wide area networks (WANs) or local area networks (LANs) which allow gamers to join existing gameplay. Game developers have incorporated a wide array of genres into the coop gaming circle with real-time strategy games, shooter games and even sports games all capable of coop gameplay.

Split-screen modes seem to be a popular option among coop gamers. Having the main screen display partitioned allows multiple players to roam freely within the game world. First-person and third-person shooters employ this technique when played in coop mode. These modes have been combined with 3D displays to present each pair of coop players with their own full-screen 2D image on the same display.

Coop games also promote resource management which adds to the challenge of the game. During gameplay, coop players typically have to share resources to complete missions. Players often have to depend on the same pool of resources to build or upgrade their avatars or units. Some games go as far as allowing players to “steal” life from other players to maintain gameplay.

The option of having a second player adds to the ease of gameplay. Often, the second player plays a helper role by assisting the first player with certain abilities or tasks. A lot of games allow the second player to take on a role that’s similar to the first player and in that way, players can strategize on the best way to conquer difficult levels.

Another reason a lot of gamers are making the switch to coop gaming is the fading demand for local multiplayer games. Online multiplayer unlike local multiplayer games, provide better graphics thanks to the split-screen capability. Finding other coop players online is almost always a guarantee, creating a more thrilling gaming experience.

Coop game options are numerous and as a gamer, you might be wondering which game you should try out next. We hope you'll find your next favorite adventure with our list of best coop games on PS4.

FAQ

Q: Can I play co-op games in single-player?

There are rarely situations where a game that has cooperative play cannot also be played alone. There are games where cooperative play is ideal, but generally, if a game has cooperative play, you can safely bet it's a game that has a single-player component as well.

Q: Is online co-op better than couch co-op?

In many situations, online co-op is simply more convenient and efficient than couch co-op. As to whether online cooperative play is more enjoyable than couch co-op, that is another matter. On the one hand, some enjoy that in-person interaction that couch co-op provides. On the other, there is something to be said for the challenge in remote communication.

Q: Is Uncharted 4: A Thief's End split-screen?

One of the PlayStation 4 era's standout titles, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End already stands solidly as one of the best single-player games on the system. On top of that, however, Uncharted 4 includes various multiplayer modes. These include Co-Op Arena, which can be played in groups of up to four players in either split-screen or online.

Q: Does PS5 have any co-op games?

As beloved as the PlayStation 4 is, there are many PS5 owners looking for cooperative gaming experiences of their own. And like the console the came before it, the PS5 does indeed feature a wide selection of titles with cooperative play. These include It Takes Two, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and more.

Q: Which is better for co-op — Xbox One or PS4?

The answer to this might either be subjective or just a straight-up tie. While exclusive greats like Uncharted 4 offer cooperative play, there are near-equals on the other side of the isle that offer terrific coop experiences. This includes games like Gears of War 4 and 5 as well as Halo 5: Guardians on Xbox One. At the end of the day, the answer to this question might depend more on company devotion than an objective breakdown.
