Hulu features one of the strongest and most expansive libraries of all the streaming services available to viewers at the moment. This vast catalog includes classic films, fan-favorite shows, and even droves of original programming that can keep viewers busy for endless viewing hours.

Hulu has a number of great comedies in its library, and viewers have many to choose from. Whether viewers are looking for a screwball comedy, comedy-drama, or romantic comedy, Hulu has them covered. The streaming service has even produced some great original comedy films that have already become classics in their own right.

Happiest Season

Happiest Season stars Kristen Stewart as Abby, who goes to her girlfriend Harper's family home for Christmas. However, Harper has not come out to her family yet. This leads Abby to question Harper and their entire relationship.

Happiest Season features an all-star cast including Dan Levy, Aubrey Plaza, Mackenzie Davis, Alison Brie, and Victor Garber. It was received positively and was praised for its LGBTQ-driven story. Happiest Season won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film in 2021.

The Breakfast Club

An '80s classic, The Breakfast Club follows five high school students who spend a Saturday in detention together. Over the course of the day, they find out that they have a lot more in common than they think, despite all being from very different backgrounds in the world of high school.

Written and directed by John Hughes, The Breakfast Club is often considered the quintessential 1980s film. It made the careers of its five stars: Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, and Anthony Michael Hall, otherwise known as the "Brat Pack."

The Internship

The Internship stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as two middle-aged, recently laid-off salesmen who take internships with Google. They do their best to compete with the younger generation and their technologically advanced skill sets. The film costars Rose Byrne, Dylan O'Brien, Aasif Mandvi, and Josh Gad.

The chemistry between Wilson and Vaughn is strong, much like in their previous film together, Wedding Crashers. The Internship features many comedic moments, such as the pair's interview, an intense Quidditch match, and even inspiring speeches relating to the film Flashdance. Real-life Google employees have stated that the company culture in the film was accurate.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin

The 40-Year-Old Virgin follows Andy, an employee at an electronic store who has been a virgin his entire life. When his coworkers find out, they conspire to help him finally lose his virginity. What follows is one hilarious issue after another while Andy tries to accomplish his goal.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin jump-started Steve Carell's career as a leading comedic actor. Director Judd Apatow cast Carell based on his performance in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Carell played Andy with the perfect mix of well-meaning and crude humor.

Enough Said

Enough Said follows Eva (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a masseuse who begins a relationship with Albert (James Gandolfini). She finds out that Albert is actually the former husband of her friend/client Marianne (Catherine Keener), complicating their relationship.

Enough Said was one of the best-reviewed films of the year and currently holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Gandolfini tragically passed away before the film was released and received a posthumous SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Louis-Dreyfus received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the film.

The Proposal

The Proposal finds Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock), a Canadian, facing deportation after her visa renewal is denied. She devises a sham marriage with her assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) in order to stay in the United States and gets roped into going to his family's hometown in Alaska to have the wedding. Along the way, the two develop real feelings for one another.

The chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds was off the charts, and Bullock was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. The supporting cast also shines in this film, including a great performance by comedy legend Betty White as Andrew's grandmother, Annie.

History Of The World Part I

History of the World Part I was written and directed by Mel Brooks. The film is a parody film of the epic genre and comprises several sketches set across the history of humanity, such as the Stone Age, the Roman Empire and The French Revolution. Brooks also stars and plays 5 roles in the film.

Part of the joke in the title is that there was no Part II made nor planned. However, in 2023, a sequel series titled History of the World Part II was released on Hulu as a limited series. Brooks returned as writer and producer, and even narrated the series.

Happy Gilmore

Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler as the titular character, a hockey player who transitions to golf and becomes a successful player on tour. The only problem for Happy is that he lets his aggressive anger get the best of him, something his golf rival, Shooter McGavin, tries to use against him to bring him down. The film costars Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, and Carl Weathers.

Happy Gilmore was another major comedy success for Sandler during the 1990s. The film has several memorable moments, but none more memorable as the fight scene between Happy and Bob Barker (playing himself), which won the inaugural "Best Fight" award at the MTV Movie Awards in 1996.

The Way Way Back

The Way Way Back follows Duncan, a shy 14-year-old kid who goes on summer vacation with his family to his mother's boyfriend's beach house. He meets and befriends Owen, the manager of the local water park, and begins to come out of his shell.

The Way Way Back's cast all give strong performances, and it currently holds an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. One change of pace for a comedy film was seeing Steve Carell take on a villain-type role. Playing the role of Duncan's mother's boyfriend, Carell brings a real element of malice as he constantly belittles Duncan across the film.

Zombieland

Zombieland finds the world in a post-apocalyptic state after a zombie virus sweeps through humanity. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) travels across the country and crosses paths with three strangers, played by Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, and they unite to survive.

Zombieland was praised for mixing humor and zombies well, as well as its unique approach to telling the story. Columbus has a set of rules that one must follow in the apocalypse, and they are shown to the viewer throughout the film. It features one of the all-time great cameos in film when the group comes across actor Bill Murray in Los Angeles. A sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, followed ten years later.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti as Nyles and Sarah, two strangers that meet at a wedding in Palm Springs, California. Sarah gets stuck in a time loop and finds that Nyles has been in the time loop for a very long time. Despite Nyles' pessimism, Sarah resolves to get out of the time loop.

Palm Springs was a Hulu original film and was a surprise hit when it debuted on the streaming service in 2020, even ending up on some "Best of" lists for films that year. It was nominated for 2 Golden Globe Awards, Best Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Actor for Samberg, and currently holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

White Men Can't Jump

White Men Can't Jump stars Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson as a pair of basketball hustlers in this sports comedy film. Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle team up on the basketball court in order to win money from a street basketball tournament. Snipes and Harrelson had great success in the '90s after the film came out, their careers bolstered by this movie.

White Men Can't Jump is one of the more memorable sports movies that were released in the '90s. It was actually cited as one of legendary director Stanley Kubrick's favorite films. Hulu is producing a reboot of the film, which releases in May 2023 and stars Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow in the lead roles.

Home Alone

Home Alone is both a '90s classic and a classic Christmas film. The film follows Kevin McAllister, an eight-year-old who is inadvertently left behind by his family when they go on vacation to Paris for Christmas. While home alone, he battles a pair of thieves, dubbed the "Wet Bandits," as they try to break into what they thought was an empty house.

Home Alone spawned a franchise, but none were as successful as the first entry. Home Alone was the second-highest-grossing film of 1990, grossing $476 million globally. Macaulay Culkin became a star overnight as a result of the film, and many viewers make it a yearly Christmas viewing.

Pretty Woman

Pretty Woman was the breakout film for Julia Roberts that shot her to superstardom. Roberts plays a Hollywood prostitute who is hired to be an escort by a wealthy business raider (Richard Gere). A relationship develops between the two, despite their vastly different backgrounds.

Roberts landed a Golden Globe nomination for her performance and received rave reviews. The film was a massive success at the box office, grossing $463 million and remains Disney’s highest grossing R-rated film. It remains one of the highest grossing romantic comedies ever made to this day.

Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day stars Bill Murray as Phil Connors, a television meteorologist who is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day event. He becomes trapped in a time loop and is forced to live the day of February 2nd over and over again. The film was written and directed by the late Harold Ramis, his final collaboration with Murray.

Groundhog Day is still considered one of the best comedy movies ever made. The impact of the film has reached across genres, as it was the guiding influence on films such as Happy Death Day and Palm Springs, which both involve time loops.

Big

Big follows Josh, a teenage boy who wishes to be big and, as a result, wakes up the next morning in the body of an adult (Tom Hanks). Josh explores his newfound adulthood and later works to figure out how to transform back into a kid. The film was directed by Penny Marshall and costars Elizabeth Perkins and David Moscow.

Big was a critical and commercial success, landing Hanks his first Academy Award nomination and cementing him as a movie star. It holds a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and has been ranked as one of the greatest comedy films of all-time by the American Film Institute.

The Waterboy

The Waterboy was part of a string of successful comedies starring Adam Sandler in the 1990s. The film followed Bobby Boucher (Sandler), a waterboy for a college football team who joined the team after he found out that he had a remarkable skill for tackling. However, Bobby must keep his football activities a secret from his overbearing mother (Kathy Bates).

Sandler also co-wrote the film along with his frequent collaborator Tim Herlihy. The Waterboy is the highest-grossing sports comedy film of all-time, grossing $190 million. As recently as 2022, Sandler has expressed interest in making a sequel, although nothing has come to pass.

Vacation Friends

Vacation Friends is a Hulu Original film that tells the story of two very different couples that befriend one another while on vacation in Mexico. When they return home, their friendship is put to the test during one of the couple's wedding weekend. The film stars John Cena, Lil Rey Howrey, Yvonne Orji and Meredith Hagner in the lead roles.

Much of the film's praise focused on its laugh out loud, easy to watch comedy as well as the performances and chemistry of the main cast. Vacation Friends also was reported to be Hulu's most-watched original film in its opening weekend to date. Hulu is developing a sequel, Honeymoon Friends.

As Good As It Gets

As Good as it Gets follows the unlikely friendship that forms between a single mother with a chronically ill son, a misanthropic author, and a gay artist. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear, and Cuba Gooding Jr. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards in 1998, including Best Picture.

Nicholson and Hunt won the Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively. As Good as it Gets became the most recent film to win Oscars for both lead performances and was the first to do so since The Silence of the Lambs six years prior.

The Cable Guy

The Cable Guy stars Jim Carrey as a cable installer who becomes overly intrusive in a customer's life. The film was directed by Ben Stiller and produced by Judd Apatow. It costars Matthew Broderick, Leslie Mann, George Segal, and Jack Black.

The dark comedy received mixed reception upon release, but has since gained a cult following in the years since its release. The Cable Guy is also one of Carrey's favorite movies he has worked on in his entire career, and he was paid a record $20 million for his work on the film.
