Thanks to Tomo-Chan Is a Girl!, anime tomboys are on a high right now. The leading lady of Winter 2023's latest rom-com has fueled the anime community's long-lost love for tomboy characters. It's not like Tomo is the first to make an impact on the persona, but recent representations of this personality trope haven't exactly been "realistic". There are tons of examples where slice-of-life and comedy titles have patronized the tomboy outlook by simply introducing a protagonist with short hair and a knack for reading.

Tomboy characters have been slowly reduced to a girl who is socially awkward, an airhead when it comes to romance, and has a bob as the obvious red flag. There are some anime tomboys who may wear a skirt, but their strong character is what the whole personality is all about. These amazing anime girls are the true representation of the tomboy trope.

Tokyo Ghoul's Touka Kirishima Is a Strong and Beloved Tomboy

Touka Tries To Avoid Eye Contact In Tokyo Ghoul

Only a few anime have the privilege of truly being called a great dark fantasy show, and Tokyo Ghoul is one of them. A better reason to love it is none other than Touka Kirishima, who is a brilliant tomboy in her own way. Her blue bob may be a typical aspect of portraying the character, but it's iconic.

Touka is Kaneki Ken's wife – a level-headed, calculated, calm and strong female who is as savage in her hunting skills as she is in her looks. Her transition between a slender figure and an extremely angry persona makes her one of the better tomboy characters out there.

Revy From Black Lagoon Is a Darker Anime Tomboy

Revy blows smoke from her gun in Black Lagoon.

Revy is one of those tomboys who neither swears by the bob nor has a deeper voice. She is more like a "badass" version of a tomboy who is as brazen as they come. Revy plays a cold-hearted, natural-born mercenary killer in Black Lagoon. Her personality and hair are a mess, but she gets the work done -- even if it means plucking out a few innocents along the way. Revy represents the dark side of the tomboy persona as her vibe is a messy mixture of being a sadist, a humorist, a steely female, and a sensual one when she needs to be.

Attack on Titan's Mikasa Raised the Bar for Great Anime Tomboys

Mikasa looking exhausted in Attack On Titan.

Attack on Titan is one of the best anime ever to exist, which automatically makes Mikasa an iconic female anime character. She's far from forgettable, and if there's anyone who sets the bar high for the tomboy trope, it's her. Mikasa Ackerman is one tough cookie who won't be manhandled by anyone.

The tragedy with her family shaped Mikasa into a serious yet cool character who knows how to keep a straight head in the face of literal monster attacks. She doesn't need a manly outfit or vibe to prove to others that she's an incredible soldier. Her brown bob, combined with the military outfit and relentless facial expression, is what true tomboys are all about.

Nisekoi's Seishirou Tsugumi Is an Important Rom-Com Tomboy

Seishiro Tsugumi in Nisekoi

Not all slice-of-life and rom-com tomboys are stereotypical or clichéd. Nisekoi's Seishirou Tsugumi is so far removed from her female side that she's introduced as a boy at the start of the show. But that wasn't a case of mistaken identity -- Seishirou is actually a hitwoman who swore to protect her childhood friend, Chitoge.

There's nothing feminine about her except her slender figure and occasional blushing. Seishirou's strong character in the midst of book-reading tomboys with a bob is like a breath of fresh air. She can be relentless and violent when needed, but she can also be vulnerable. Seishirou Tsugumi does justice to the tomboy trope in rom-coms.

Winry Rockbell (Fullmetal Alchemist) Is Simply a Badass Tomboy

Winry looking over her shoulder and smiling in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Nothing about Winry's physical appearance in Fullmetal Alchemist would scream "tomboy"; the only giveaway is her excitement when she encounters tech. Winry is a total gear head and a tech nerd. If one were to give her a choice between a prosthetic leg and a handsome guy, she would definitely hug the leg.

The best thing about Winry's tomboy portrayal is that she doesn't even have to try. There's no need to spell it out through cringe-worthy expressions of fake hatred for all things girlish. She is simply a very tough gal who has the brains, the heart, and all the right emotions.
