In the world of Japanese anime, characters will stand out for any number of reasons, such as having a unique hairstyle or hair color, an unusual piece of clothing, or cool accessories and gadgets. Some characters dress in all black, while others wear all red. Yet, there are some characters who are known for usually dressing in kimonos.

A kimono is literally "something to wear" in Japanese, but a kimono is also a beautiful and classy garment to wear. A handful of anime characters are known for wearing kimonos not just for formal occasions but in their everyday life, and they might be well-known for it.

10 Nezuko Kamado Wears A Pink Kimono (Demon Slayer)

Nezuko Kamado surrounded by sparkles in Demon Slayer.

Nezuko Kamado is Tanjiro's younger sister who was turned into a demon when Muzan Kibutsuji attacked the Kamado family one fateful night. Ever since then, Nezuko has had the same general appearance, wearing a charming pink kimono with black leggings and a dark overcoat.

Nezuko may look like a doll, but she is far from passive. She has been known to aid her demon slayer brother more than once in battle, and she practically tore the Upper Moon Six, Daki, apart when they crossed paths in the Entertainment District. Daki soon learned not to underestimate her.

9 Yuiko Komi Is Curious About Her Granddaughter's Daily Life (Komi Can't Communicate)

Komi Yuiko kneels in her room in Komi Can't Communicate.

The elderly Yuiko Komi doesn't often appear, but when she does, this tough anime grandma makes a strong impression. Yuiko is the stern but well-meaning matriarch of the entire Komi family, and she's not afraid to chew out her adult son, Masayoshi, off-camera. It's not clear what exactly she said, though.

Yuko is a bit softer with her granddaughters, Shoko and Akira, and she will gently ask about Shoko Komi's school life and personal life, and she is always glad to hear that Shoko is doing well. When it's time for hanafuda card games, though, Yuiko will show no mercy to her granddaughters.

8 Yugiri Is A Zombie Idol (Zombie Land Saga)

Zombie Land Saga is a humorous take on the idol anime genre, featuring the all-zombie idol group Franchouchou and their misadventures in the Saga Prefecture. Most of the group's members died in the late 20th or early 21st century, but Yugiri, the most mature and sophisticated of them, actually died in the 1800s.

Yugiri is an elegant courtesan type who never fails to dress her best in a variety of basic kimonos, often with red and white patterns on her clothes. She clearly prefers old-fashioned clothes, but Yugiri is also perfectly fine with wearing modern idol outfits for live performances. She can look good in anything.

7 Glass Comes From Another World (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)

Most characters in the isekai anime series The Rising of the Shield Hero wear fantasy-inspired outfits, but not Glass. Instead, she is the Fan Vassal Hero, and she hails from a world separate from that of the Melromarc kingdom. The same is true of L'Arc and Therese, too.

Glass is a powerful wizard who can use her fans to conjure devastating magic, and only Naofumi Iwatani's best shields can stand up to magic of that caliber. In Season 2, though, Glass traded her kimono for a more rugged adventuring outfit, and she changed her hairstyle, too.

6 Nora/Stray Is Always Scheming Something (Noragami)

Nora Stray

In the fantasy anime series Noragami, the gods use companions known as shinki to carry out their will and even give them special names as well. However, there are "strays" like Nora who actually belong to several gods, and these stray shinki are regarded with suspicion or even disgust.

Nora doesn't let that get her down, though. This kimono-wearing shinki uses her loose allegiances to her advantage, and she is often plotting both for and against her friend, the minor god Yato. Hiyori and Yato can never tell what exactly Nora is up to until it's too late.

5 Kurenai Kogetsu Is A Fascinating Villainess (Edens Zero)

Kurenai Kogetsu in Edens Zero

Kurenai Kogetsu was one of the toughest villains whom Shiki Granbell and his crewmates ever fought in the first season of Edens Zero. Kurenai is actually similar to Demon Slayer's Daki, a haughty and cruel villainess who wears a kimono and treats everyone else like disposable trash.

Kurenai is also the mother of Homura, one of Rebecca's best crewmates, but mother and daughter don't get along. In fact, after Kurenai's defeat, Homura left her mother to her fate, knowing full well that Kurenai would meet a sticky end. After all, Kurenai had tyrannized an entire planet and its people for years.

4 Ayase Chihaya Is An Expert Gamer (Chihayafuru)

Ayase Chihaya

Ayase Chihaya is a josei protagonist who is usually seen wearing classy kimonos if she is not wearing her school uniform. She is an energetic and competitive person who might feel more like a shonen protagonist at times, including her fondness for forming rivalries. And she's always up for a game or two.

For years now, Ayase has nursed a passion for card games, especially karuta card games. She even became the captain, more or less, of her school's karuta club thanks to her enthusiasm for the game. She definitely ranks among anime's best gamers.

3 Kasumi Fuu Seeks Her Samurai Father (Samurai Champloo)

Fuu

Samurai Champloo is a short but fascinating anime series taking place in late 1800s Japan with anachronistic hip-hop elements, from its soundtrack to random characters beatboxing or acting like rappers. In the middle of this amusing adventure is the young lady Kasumi Fuu, who must find her father.

Fuu recruited the wandering swordsmen Mugen and Jin to protect her and help her find her father, a samurai who evidently smells like sunflowers. Mugen and Jin have few, if any, leads, but they are still fairly loyal to the kimono-wearing Fuu and protect her from harm... if they aren't fighting each other, that is.

2 Dia Kurosawa Sometimes Wears Kimonos (Love Live! Sunshine!!)

Dia

Unlike some other anime characters, Dia Kurosawa does not wear kimonos by default, but she has been seen wearing them in some media aside from token summer festival episodes. Dia was a student at Uranohoshi high school for a time and belonged to the AZALEA group as well.

Dia's image color is red, and that fact reflects in the kimono she is seen wearing in certain media, not to mention her ability to play the Yamatogoto instrument. She also loves movie-watching, reading, and school idols, though she tends to keep her love of school idols secret if she can.

1 Kamiya Kaoru Wields A Sword (Rurouni Kenshin)

kamiya Kaoru

Kamiya Kaoru is usually seen wearing comfortable kimonos and colorful ribbons in her hair for added pizzazz in the story of Rurouni Kenshin. Kamiya keeps herself busy as a kendo coach in a school in Tokyo, though she was threatened by an impostor battousai until the real battousai arrived.

Kamiya soon became one of Kenshin's best friends and allies, though she can be a bit possessive and jealous at times. Her single greatest fear is for Kenshin to wander off alone and abandon her for no good reason.
