The tale of Berserk spans over 365 chapters and counting, marking it as one of the longest manga series out there. In all that time, protagonist Guts the swordsman met and fought many different characters, ranging from noble knights to monstrous apostles and scheming queens and more. And some of these characters rank among Guts' best friends of all.

For a time, Guts was practically all alone, but during the Falcon of the Millenium Empire story arc, Guts had his own adventurer party by his side, including old friends, new faces, and even two fairies. These characters all trust and respect one another, and they are also quite brave, ready to face any bandit, monster, or hostile knight during their journey.

10 Farnese Often Hesitates To Fight

Farnese in Berserk holding up sword.

No one would call the redeemed holy knight commander Farnese a coward. But then again, she isn't as capable as her allies Guts and Serpico, and she knows it. Farnese has experience as a knight backing her up, but her unit had been a ceremonial one that rarely saw action.

Farnese often hesitates or doubts herself when powerful enemies, human or otherwise, appear. She is ready and willing to stand between Casca and a villain if need be, but Farnese would rather have someone else save the day if possible.

9 Ivalera Isn't Really A Fighter

Ivalera in Berserk.

The fairy Ivalera is Schierke's companion and good friend, and Ivalera will go to great lengths to keep Schierke happy and safe. In fact, Ivalera often acts like a big sister to Schierke, and she might also caution Schierke against taking recklessly risky actions.

Ivalera isn't a dedicated fighter, and she is rather cautious, too. But she's also not the type to just run screaming from monsters or villains. Ivalera, if need be, will stand by Schierke's side against a powerful foe and support the young witch however she can.

8 Isidro Knows When He Should Run

Isidro sword in hand

Isidro is a brash boy who joined Guts in the hopes of learning to become a great swordsman himself one day. For now, Isidro is more like a daring thief or rogue than a true warrior like Guts, but he's trying, and he should get some credit for that, even if he's pretty annoying at times.

Isidro is rather brave, or rather, he's reckless and daring, and he often gets into trouble because of it. If he gets in too deep with the enemy, he will panic a bit and flee. The thing is, Isidro will revert to his daring self soon and do it all over again.

7 Schierke Doesn't Like Taking Huge Risks

Schierke looks onward in Berserk anime

The robed witch Schierke learned much about magic and other worlds from her beloved mentor, Flora, though she has little experience traveling in the big wide world beyond her forest home. That said, Schierke is a remarkably brave girl who may be cautious, but far from cowardly.

Schierke won't recklessly shove her face into an apostle's and stare it down, but she will also stand her ground and summon magic to fight back if need be. She would rather avoid combat and minimize the risks, but she will also do everything in her power to aid Guts time and again.

6 Puck Fights With His Own Fairy Style

The goofy fairy Puck has, chronologically, been by Guts' side since the Black Swordsman story arc and has stayed there ever since. Puck can't harm the enemy any more than Ivalera can, but that fact won't stop Puck from putting on a brave front as a Tinkerbell-sized wannabe warrior.

Puck has fun making up his own armed and unarmed fighting styles, and he even coached Isidro in the way of the sword. Puck will often be alarmed when enemies show up, but he won't run in fear, because he knows Guts will save the day.

5 Serpico Is Cautious But Bold

Serpico in Berserk.

The slick swordsman Serpico is Farnese's half-brother and her sworn protector. Serpico emphasizes technique and precision over brute force, unlike his uneasy ally Guts, and the two of them have actually crossed blades more than once. Serpico showed remarkable courage each time.

Serpico knows when to cut his losses and run, and he might get nervous if his enemy gets the upper hand. But on the whole, Serpico ranks among Berserk's bravest, most stalwart heroes, and he will gladly cut down any hostile soldier, bandit, or monster that gets in his party's way. Especially if it's for Farnese's sake.

4 Roderick Can't Wait To Show Off

Roderick in the Berserk manga.

Roderick is a bold, daring ship captain who loves to show off what he can do, and he definitely ranks among the bravest characters in Guts' party overall. He made his debut partway through the Falcon of the Millennium Empire story arc in the port city of Vritannis, where he got along well with the Vandimion family's members.

Roderick, as a ship captain, saw Guts' party through some of its roughest adventures, all in the name of delivering Guts and his allies to their faraway destinations across the sea. It doesn't matter if monsters and hostile soldiers are around. Roderick will brave the flames of war to get the job done.

3 Azan Knows His Duty

The holy knight Azan has fought by Farnese's side in battle before, and he will gladly enter the fray once again if his duty compels him to. Azan is a model knight, a disciplined, purpose-driven, and incredibly brave warrior who will risk his very life for the people who need him.

Azan may not be Guts' best friend, but he and the Black Swordsman have an understanding, and they will fight side by side against any foe. Azan is just as tough as he looks, and he has the courage of ten men to back it up.

2 In Her Prime, Caca Was Courage Personified

casca leading the charge

In her prime in the Golden Age story arc, Casca was a vital ally of Griffith's and a top-tier leader of men. She worked hard for years to earn the right to command Griffith's troops into battle.

In the good old days, Casca would fearlessly lead her men right into the thick of the action, and she wouldn't hesitate to face the enemy's biggest, scariest knight commanders. Casca is smart enough to retreat if she must, but cowardice will never dictate her actions in battle. She will stand and fight.

1 Guts Knows No Fear

Guts in Berserk.

The protagonist himself, Guts, fears no enemy in the story of Berserk. From the very start, he has been a bold, strong-willed warrior who will gladly charge at the enemy and hack his way to victory. War is his life, and conflict is a means of survival. Guts isn't about to fear the very thing that sustains him.

Guts has faced huge apostles, legions of Tudor or Kushan troops, elite assassins, and even the God Hand itself, and in each case, he will dive right into the action. Any foe that stands between him and vengeance will be cut down without any mercy or fear whatsoever.
