Official Press Release
LOS ANGELES, CA – Beginning in January 2006, Bernard Chang will teach ILLUSTRATION FOR COMIC BOOKS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS, based on comic book art and sequential illustration at the prestigious Art Center College of Design through their continuing studies program, Art Center at Night (ACAN), in Pasadena, California. The 14-week course will introduce students to the fundamentals of sequential illustration, including storytelling techniques and the penciller’s role in the creation of a comic book/graphic novel, as well as understanding of other roles in production.
Bernard began his career in comics in 1992, after being discovered by the legendary Bob Layton, as the regular penciller on The Second Life of Doctor Mirage for Valiant Comics, where he was voted “Top Ten Artist” by the Wizard: Guide to Comics. He spent four years at Valiant before moving on to Marvel Comics and, later, DC Comics, where he illustrated such titles as X-Men, Cable, the New Mutants, and Superman Plus. Last March, Bernard finished the children’s book industry’s first ever hybrid chapter book/graphic novel, The Black Belt Club #1: Seven Wheels of Power, published by Scholastic (Harry Potter) and Blue Sky Press (Captain Underpants). His last two book projects hit the New York Times Bestsellers List: How to Make Love Like a Porn Star and The Game:Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, both written by award-winning author Neil Strauss of Rolling Stone magazine (and published by ReganBooks). Neil and Bernard are also developing ReganBooks’ first graphic novel, slated to come out in 2006.
