The saga of the Star Trek 2 villain continues following conflicting reports about who Benicio del Toro might play in the follow-up to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 franchise reboot. Latino Review contended the Oscar winner would play Khan, the role originated by Ricardo Montalbán, while HitFlix turned to Abrams himself, who flatly stated, “Not true.”
So, how does that make sense? Well, Vulture now reports that del Toro has dropped out of talks for the sequel.
We’re thinking that, by the time Abrams made his comment, the director already knew del Toro was out. Vulture says talks fell apart Wednesday over “monetary issues,” so it’s still possible that Khan is in the movie, but that he just won’t be played by del Toro. Whoever does get the job will have to sign on pretty quickly because the Star Trek sequel is set to begin shooting in January for a May 17, 2013, release.
