Benedict Cumberbatch Slithers As Smaug in New 'Hobbit' B-Roll

New B-roll footage from last year's fantasy epic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been released by Warner Bros. UK. Titled "Conversations With Smaug," the clip is used to promote the upcoming The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition, which will be released Nov. 4 on Blu-ray 3D and DVD.

In the clip, you can watch Benedict Cumberbatch writhe sinisterly on the floor in a mo-cap suit, hissing and snarling his way through lines -- you know, just like a dragon would.

The clip also includes an interview with Smaug director/writer/producer Peter Jackson.

"The other secret weapon we had for Smaug beyond the design was the fact that he is a talking dragon," said Jackson. "We could use his personality to our advantage." The director then talks about how they wanted an actor that would surprise them with their performance and do something original.

Cumberbatch will reprise his role in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which opens Dec. 17.
