Benedict Cumberbatch revealed he'd love to reunite with his The Power of the Dog co-star Kodi Smit-McPhee now that the X-Men franchise is now part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Cumberbatch discussed this during an interview with Variety when asked if there's a possibility that Doctor Strange could come face-to-face with the mutant Nightcrawler, who was portrayed by Smit-McPhee in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, 2018's Deadpool 2 and 2019's Dark Phoenix.

"We’ve talked about this," the actor admitted. "We loved working with each other, so we would love to do that jam. Of course it'd be a very different vibe, but yeah.”

Meanwhile, Smit-McPhee added that "it would be so cool" to see those worlds collide. "It's an honor to play both sides of the spectrum," the actor noted. "But it would be even more an honor to cross paths again with someone you grew so close with on something so theatrical, something like this, and then to go to something fun like that — it would be great."

While Marvel has yet to reveal any details about the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU, there is speculation several of the mutants will appear in Marvel's upcoming Deadpool 3. That film's release has yet to be revealed, but Wade Wilson/Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds said in early August he thinks there's a 70 percent chance the film will start shooting in 2022. Specifically, the actor revealed they're "really actively developing it and getting it into pretty good shape."

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also confirmed later that month that Deadpool 3 already has a spot on the super-secret MCU release slate, and Reynolds "is working very hard on [the script] with our writers as we speak."

In the meantime, Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Doctor Strange in two upcoming MCU films: Spider-Man: No Way Home, which bows on December 17, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is scheduled to hit theaters on March 25, 2022. Fans will recall both those films will deal with the idea of the Multiverse, which was officially introduced in Disney+'s Loki series, and will see the return of a handful of Spider-Man villains that first appeared in the Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man franchises starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, respectively, as the titular web-slinger.

Directed by Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog will be released in theaters on Nov. 17 and streaming on Netflix on Dec. 1.
