The world can look forward to a new Dark Knight with Matt Reeves' The Batman, which takes place in Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe and will hopefully fill the Caped-Crusader-shaped hole that Ben Affleck left behind upon his exit from the franchise. However, new details have since emerged about the actor's scrapped solo film.

In an interview with HappySadConfused, cinematographer Robert Richardson talked about the unfinished Batman film and when asked about how far along it had come, he explained, "I wanted to shoot Batman with Ben [Affleck] cause that was the next film we had. There was a script, but not a loved script. There was a lot of work he was doing to it to change it." He then revealed some of the ideas contained within the script, "he was going into the more insanity aspects...He was entering more into the Arkham, he’s going into where everyone was bad."

Batman has one of the most well-known rogues galleries in comics, and venturing into Arkham Asylum would have undoubtedly allowed Affleck's film to scratch its surface in ways that other Batman-centric films have never quite been able to do. Arkham Asylum itself has only been shown a handful of times on the big screen and even then, most of those appearances took place in the campy world of the Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher Batman films. This lack of focus on such an iconic staple of Batman's world was mentioned to Richardson who agreed, "No, and that's where we were going. I was very interested in that one."

The previous iteration of The Batman was not only being written by Affleck, but he would have also directed and starred in the film. Unfortunately, the former DCEU star reportedly felt he could not get the film to work in a way that would have satisfied the Dark Knight's passionate fanbase.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves, who will also produce alongside Dylan Clark. The film stars Robert Pattinson as a young Bruce Wayne and is scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021.
