Mike Judge, the creator of Beavis and Butt-Head, gave a first look at the '90's rudest cartoon teens all grown up and announced when the duo's second movie will release on Paramount+.Judge posted concept art of an adult Butt-Head and Beavis, tweeting, "Beavis and Butt-Head will be returning this year with a brand new movie and more on Paramount+. No exact date yet, but soon. They need some time to get back in shape."
Beavis and Butt-Head originally aired on MTV in 1992 as part of the animation showcase Liquid Television. Picked up for seven seasons between 1993-1997, the franchise rode a wave of popularity and notoriety to a 1996 feature movie, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. After a brief MTV revival in 2011, ViacomCBS sibling network Comedy Central announced two new seasons in 2020. There has been no further information on the new seasons, but Judge's "and more" could be a sign of things to come.
Beavis and Butt-Head stirred controversy for depicting two unsupervised, unintelligent teenage boys getting into vulgar and violent adventures. A number of fatal accidents were blamed on children emulating the show, and while dubious evidence led to no legal action being taken, MTV nonetheless censored some episodes and added a disclaimer to the start of the show reading, "Beavis and Butt-Head are not real. They are stupid cartoon people completely made up by this Texas guy whom we hardly even know. Beavis and Butt-Head are dumb, crude, thoughtless, ugly, sexist, self-destructive fools. But for some reason, the little wienerheads make us laugh."
Episodes also included actual music videos, with the addition of crass commentary from Beavis and Butt-Head, intrinsically tying the show to the MTV cultural phenomenon. Beavis and Butt-Head introduced many to the notion of adult animation and is often credited with blazing the trail for other animated series like South Park and Family Guy, which also drew condemnation for humor seen as too profane or inappropriate for cartoons. The second revival of Beavis and Butt-Head sees it return to an animation landscape for which it takes a lot of credit. To wit, the second movie will stream on Paramount+ next to Jodie, a spinoff of Daria, which is itself a spinoff of the original Beavis and Butt-Head.
Judge created Beavis and Butt-Head as a satire of Generation X and has since become known for a streak of acclaimed shows such as FOX's King of the Hill and HBO's Silicon Valley, and movies like Office Space and Idiocracy. Judge has proven adept at changing his satirical social targets, and the images of Beavis and Butt-Head as adults promise a whole new biting angle on society.
The second Beavis and Butt-Head movie will stream on Paramount+ in 2022.
